POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

The Story of a New Name by Elena Ferrante: this is book two of the Neapolitan Quartet and it does not disappoint.

I’ve noticed a pattern with Ferrante’s books - they pull me in from the start, slow down a little in the middle, and then somehow leave me completely locked in by the end. What am I going to do when I finish book four?! 🥲

One of the things I appreciate most about Ferrante’s writing is the rawness with which she portrays Elena and Lila’s friendship. The jealousy, the admiration, the competition, the resentment, the love. How some friendships can be both a source of comfort and a source of pain. It’s honest, flawed, and so true to life. No romanticizing, no pretending that love always makes relationships easy. Just the uncomfortable truth that sometimes the people who know us best are also the people who stir up the most complicated feelings in us.

Elena and Lila’s relationship is as fascinating as it is frustrating, and I find myself wanting to understand them both, even when they make it difficult.

Being of Italian descent, I also loved the little cultural nuances that felt so familiar, especially the family dynamics and unspoken expectations.

Two books in, and I’m already so invested in these women and the lives they’re trying to build. On to book three!

Bwaya: The Royal Legacy of Mindanao

Long before Spanish colonization, the Sultanate of Buayan (Bwaya) stood as one of the powerful Maguindanaon political centers of Mindanao, with its royal lineage rooted in the upper Pulangi River basin.

The rulers of Bwaya traced their ancestry through generations of royal families, whose genealogies, known as tarsilas, preserved their bloodlines, political alliances, and claims to authority. These royal houses played an important role in shaping the political landscape of precolonial Mindanao.

Among the distinguished titles associated with its ruling lineage was Raja Bwayan, reflecting the authority and prestige of its royal house. Its rulers maintained relationships and rivalries with neighboring powers, including the Sultanate of Maguindanao.

One of its most prominent descendants was Datu Uto, a powerful 19th-century ruler whose leadership and resistance to Spanish expansion demonstrated the continuing influence of Bwaya’s royal lineage.

In my drawing, I wanted to honor this royal heritage while keeping the Pulangi River basin in the background. The river was not simply part of the landscape. It was the heart of the territory from which generations of rulers governed, formed alliances, and defended their sovereignty.

The name Bwaya, meaning crocodile, carries a connection to the waterways that shaped this kingdom’s history.

For me, this drawing is a tribute to the royal houses of Mindanao, their ancestral lands, and the generations whose stories existed long before colonization.

A little CRT cutie for you 🫰

Back after the event! My computer is maybe dying and my partner’s computer was infected with an infostealer virus so he had to reinstall Windows 🤪✌️

He forgot to change ONE (1) password and they bought $360 worth of towels and… sent them to our house?? 😭💀

So anyway, today’s little guy is a CRT monitor. I actually prefer the drawing on the second slide but wanted the more colorful doodle as the main image. I need a little color to offset the annoying tech things rn!!

Have a bunch of merch of the little guys on my main shop, but I should probably set up a standalone shop for this project… Will let you know when I do!

#plunoia #littleguy #illustratorsofinstagram Lilac ink doodle of a CRT creature with 3 legs, a smiling face on the monitor, and a leaf sprout sticking out of their head. The lined page is underneath the purple cap of the pen used to draw it and is on-top of a colorful planner covered in stickers.

Isopod family on their way home.

Decided to participate in Peachtober this year! I’ve been a fan of Sha’an’s work for quite a while but never participated in her yearly challenge. Being brave this year, haha.

I’ve combined the first 2 prompts for this illustration. Day 1 is Oak and Day 2 is Chimney.

Drawn using my (recently purchased) SuperNote Nomad tablet. It’s super fun to use. Loving the simplicity of it and being limited to only greyscale. I’m finding it’s removing the barrier of perfection that my iPad usually brings. Still love the iPad of course and plan on using it for my finished pieces, but the SuperNote will be great for more casual art making. Hoping I can find my creativity again.
