Tag your turf friends and say thank you!

As the 2026 @usga U.S. Amateur Championship comes to an end let’s give a shoutout to the agronomy staff that worked day in and day out to provide the purest conditions possible.

Sometimes courses look better on television than they do in person but anyone lucky enough to see Merion Golf Club this weekend can confirm how amazing that place truly is.

Not only did their grounds team show up, but members of the grounds community from clubs and courses all around gathered to lend a helping hand. This happens at so many large events and it’s something we don’t talk about enough.

So, cheers to you all providing the best experience possible to golfers like myself that may or may not chunk it a foot behind the ball and ruin your grass.

Glad to get out there with @jesseeldredge who was covering the hard working staff behind the scenes of the U.S. Amateur.

Great golf does not happen by accident.

Since 1939, North Hills Country Club’s greens had lost 23% of their total putting surface. Excluding holes 7 and 12, which were rebuilt entirely, the remaining greens had lost one third of their original size.

Some losses were far greater - including 77% on 9 and 68% on 18.

That means more than smaller greens. It means fewer pinnable hole locations, less strategic variety and fewer ways to challenge players of different abilities.

This week, @nhccwi began a major renovation led by Superintendent @mattdshafer, architect Sam Beckman of @emergency9golf and the club’s maintenance and construction teams.

Work started on 5 and 13, which had lost 26% and 43% of their original putting surfaces. The yellow outlines from April show how the restored greens will extend beyond their recent footprints.

The project will bring the greens closer to their original shapes, sizes and contours while rebuilding bunkers, restoring turf and preserving the impressive speed and character players expect from North Hills.

“A renovation of this magnitude is about much more than reshaping greens, rebuilding bunkers or planting new grass. It is built on trust,” Shafer said.

That trust also depends on explaining what is changing and why.

“Every green contour, every bunker, every tree and every acre of restored turf has a purpose,” Matt said.

Beckman emphasized the relationship between architect and superintendent:

“It’s important that there is strong communication between the superintendent and architect, especially on a project of North Hills’ scope.”

“The architect and construction team are only there for a short period of time. The superintendent and team then have to rebuild that relationship with the changes.”

As Matt put it:

“This renovation is not about changing North Hills. It is about revealing what this golf course has always been capable of becoming.”

Great golf does not happen by accident.

Neither does a renovation designed to last for generations.
