Susan Sidebottom | Past Light in Present Time

Artist Statement | The “art of visiting” is how I approach being fully present in my environment, an ethos instilled in me from childhood. Forming deep connections through my genuine interest in others and uniting with them around a specific purpose is critical to my photography practice.
My practice has always addressed social conditions, and this series, Past Light in Present Time, is my most personal work. It explores life passages and memory through images that invite the viewer to place themselves within an environment influenced by dementia. The work prompts the viewer to consider what is real or not, with layers of invisibility, and a rhythm punctuated by motifs.

As my mom’s vision changed with her dementia, depth perception was compromised in white environments, and green was the last color she could see. I embodied many of these changes and explored such sensations while making these works. Putting myself in the images was how I thought of the images as opening outwards, inviting people to come in.
