“I know you miss me a little—pink locket with a perfect / fitting key. Moonlight juicing the harbor. I know you try to feign nonchalance, / but when you feel constellation, ocean foam, midnight shimmer, who do you call?”

Also pictured, artist Ross Palmer Beecher with me and Sandra Yannone and selected pieces of her solo exhibit, At the Seam, an impressive collection of quilts and tombstones crafted from recovered materials, oil, tin and bullet casings.

Selected by guest judge Ruth Award, Susan Rich’s poem “The Cloud of Unknowing” won the 2026 Patricia Goedicke Prize in Poetry. This poem blew us away with its ability to hold beauty and promise alongside heartbreak as it imagines a future that will never come for Amer Rabee, an American teenager who was murdered last year by Israeli soldiers in the West Bank. “What if,” the poem asks, “rather than a soldier’s bullet / planted in the middle of his forehead, he / returns as a wild poppy on the hillside, a pink dragonfly?” For Amer and the thousands of other children killed in Palestine, we wish we knew the answer to this question, and we are grateful for the opportunity to consider it in this powerful piece.

Find “The Cloud of Unknowing” in CutBank 105, available at the link in our bio.
