Every single person on this planet exists because of a missed period. And yet we still design our schools, our workplaces, our economies as if menstruation is an inconvenience instead of a predictable biological fact.

In India, an estimated 23 million girls drop out of school the day they get their period. In the US, 1 in 5 girls miss school because they don't have access to a pad.

This isn't a "developing world" problem. It's an infrastructure problem.
What would change if we stopped treating periods as a personal inconvenience and started treating them as an institutional responsibility?

This week’s SMART roundup: what I’m sharing, making, answering, reading, and trying right now.  Comment SMART for the link to all of these things.

Sharing: the books I read and loved over the past 6 months, the skincare I’ve been restocking, and a new habit stack.

Making: a bigger effort for family dinners. I’ve been setting the table and having a veggie/yogurt/cheese plate waiting for the kids when they get home, so I can finish dinner. We go around and share our rose & thorn, and it’s become one of my favorite moments in the day. I’m also trying to get properly dressed every day. Still a work in progress.

Answering: how I plan our dinners every week, and the meals we make often

Reading: currently reading We Who Will Die by @staciastarkauthor, and listening to The Alter Ego Effect (a recommendation from on @lesalfred’s interview with @siffhaider on @shessoluckypod)

Trying: to manage my anxiety better. I’ve leaned on my propanalol prescription when I’m teetering between overwhelmed and whelmed, using my @getbrick (my favorite stocking stuffer!), and quitting reality TV. I’m sad to admit that the last one has made a huge impact, and I’m annoyed by it.

Since my last SMART post, we got through the holiday season (and are nearly recovered from it!). Two highlights were celebrating @sushmadwivedi’s birthday and ringing in the new year at @faganchelsea’s vampire disco party. We celebrated our 15 year wedding anniversary (!!!) with a sushi dinner at @wegmansnextdoornyc, and spent the past week settling into the school/work routine and taking care of all of my annual well checks.

Let’s catch up. How was your holiday break? What have you read and loved lately? Most importantly, have you booked all of your appointments yet? I outsourced mine to @duckbill.ai (I blocked out a few Wednesday afternoons and asked them to fit them all in those openings).
