A broken refrigerator. Fifty years ago.⚡️Sparked an idea for a #GreenvilleSC entrepreneur. 💡

👋🏽 Meet Pedro Escobar, founder of @susu.lend, a fintech company creating new pathways to access funds and build credit.

Escobar’s family immigrated to the U.S. from Honduras in the late 1970s. Despite hard work and a steady job, traditional lenders were unable to help with refrigerator repair costs.

With few options left, Escobar’s father turned to his community. By organizing a susu, a generations-old savings practice in which members pool money and take turns receiving the funds, he raised enough for a replacement.

The experience stayed with Escobar. In 2021, he found a way to bring a susu into the digital age. 🧑🏾‍💻💚 #HispanicHeritageMonth

Time for another #FounderFriday when we showcase cohort 2 of our accelerator program. Meet Pedro Escobar of @susu.lend!

Susu Lend is a fintech firm dedicated to eliminating predatory lending and opening doors to fair financial solutions for the unbanked and credit invisible. The company strives to provide marginalized communities with affordable loans and essential financial services by integrating traditional risk underwriting with innovative, patent-pending social underwriting technology. Beyond delivering financial products, Susu Lend is deeply committed to fostering financial literacy and empowerment, helping users transition from essential financial products to more advanced services such as life insurance and securities, ensuring their comprehensive participation in the financial ecosystem, and establishing a foundation for enduring financial stability.

The concept of Susu Lend originated from an MBA assignment at Cornell University, where Pedro met his future co-founders. United by a shared mission to battle predatory lending, they transformed a class assignment into a beacon of financial empowerment and inclusivity.
