Coppercoat is finally done! What we thought would be a fairly quick bottom job turned into a marathon of sanding, more sanding, coating, sanding again… and then somehow even more sanding.
We started with multiple days of sanding before creating a tent to keep the rain off. Next we applied four base coats (Ceram-Kote 426), then called in reinforcements (huge shoutout to Nara & Ghostlight) to help tackle the actual Coppercoat application. Six hours later, hull 1 was finally complete… and then we had to turn around and repeat the entire process on hull 2.
After a couple more long days of sanding to expose the copper and smooth things out, we moved the boat so we could reach the spots hidden under the chocks and do the whole process yet again.
And because apparently we weren’t finished suffering, we ended up using three different antifouls: the Coppercoat itself, a metallic-free antifoul around the metal components (rudders, zincs, etc.), and another coating on the rudders and daggerboards.
The process was long, messy, exhausting, and incredibly satisfying to finally finish. Here’s to clean hulls and hopefully a very long time before we do this again.

Samana, in the Dominican Republic - such a welcome change from the islands of the Bahamas (we had forgotten what greenery & hills looked like!). The fresh fruits and veggies in the market were amazing. Alexandra’s mom came to visit, we made (lots! of) sushi with friends, walked around town, and of course spent some time continuing to repair our mainsail. There has also been an enormous amount of rain, but on the plus side, our water tanks are full!

I can’t believe we sailed here. About 2.5 weeks in the Bahamas, and it’s blowing away expectations.

I got to add sailboat racing to my resume this week. I think the only reason we won anything was because I put my pirate costume on (a single gold hoop earring I picked up on the beach) for flare. #head28 #cruisingregatta #classicyacht #bahamas

The around the island race was yesterday and we came in 3rd/ It was a long upwind, which isn't a gaffer's strong point, but the spinnaker reaches sure were fun!
