POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

A week ago today I started the first challenge of my Ride Beyond Limits campaign, attempting the Ontario E-W record. I started this campaign to raise awareness around mental health and raising funds for @cmhasimcoecounty while pushing myself not only physically during these challenges but also mentally. During ultra distances it is not the cycling that is the hard part, but rather the suffer you go through mentally.

The weekends ride consisted of blistering winds, heat, stomach distress early into the ride, a flat tire and trying to stay awake after such a period without sleep. We were able to finish the ride in 31 hours and 40 minutes, setting a new record pending verification by the World Ultra Cycling Association. There were a lot of dark moments in this ride, self talking myself to keep pushing on even though I wanted to quit and pack it all up so badly.

This ride reminded me of how the brain wants to quit when things get tough, almost like it always wants the easy way out. But if you’re able to convince yourself, push further and tell yourself it’s possible, the mind can be much much stronger than you ever thought was achievable.

Looking back and reflecting over the past week, I couldn’t be any more grateful for how many people have stood beside me, encouraged me, shared motivating words, supported and shared the campaign. It’s amazing how far we’ve come and how much we have been able to raise in such a short amount of time. Already almost closing into my goal while just completing my first challenge of the campaign!

I couldn’t have done this without any of you, thank you for everything.

Thank you to the support crew for sacrificing their weekend and supporting me for this event with anything I needed. This wouldn’t have been possible without you.

A special thanks to @barriecyclingclub for standing by me with this campaign and supporting the journey.

Coaching from @dillonlongo prepping me for all these long events and races whilst managing fatigue and dialling in strategies along the way.

The Night Before Christmas...

I arrived at Walmart in the late afternoon to buy a few last minute groceries before the stores close for good. I grabbed a coffee from the nearby McDonald's and I began to look around and people watch. I look at the expression on each and every face. I notice how people move throughout the store. I pay extremely close attention to what people are shopping for. The tension in the store, the hustle through the aisles, the impatiently waiting individuals in the self-checkout line. All the small details collectively accumulate to paint a larger picture than I'm able to accurately depict. The environment is stressful to many, but somehow I'm able to find peace and remain calm.

I tried to make sense of all of the controlled chaos. However I just stay seated, ponder and keep asking myself, do all these people know the real meaning of Christmas? It seems like their shopping carts are full of material goods, but their hearts are empty of love and joy. Only in the last couple of years have I attempted to appreciate the real meaning of Christmas and separate myself from the commercial, business aspect of the holiday. Today I'm here to tell you to get off your phones/social media and actually go be social with your family. Help to bring back the real meaning of the holiday. Go share a special meal with your family, give your friends a call and most importantly appreciate all that you have to be grateful for.

Wishing you & your family a
Merry Christmas 🎄
