Bry Webb, best known as the frontman and principal songwriter of legendary Canadian indie-rock band The Constantines, returns to Winnipeg with COTS, the solo project of Montreal composer, singer and guitarist Steph Yates.

Webb's solo work carries the raw, intimate songwriting of his Constantines years into a more stripped-down and expansive sound. His most recent record, Run With Me, marked his return to recording after stepping away from music and features contributions from longtime collaborators and friends including members of The Constantines, Julie Doiron, Jennifer Castle, Daniel Romano and Steph Yates.

COTS brings a beautifully unconventional mix of folk, bossa nova, jazz and classical influences, built around Yates' intricate guitar work and distinctive voice. Her music has been described as cinematic, atmospheric and subtly experimental.

Together, Bry Webb & COTS create an intimate and unpredictable night of Canadian songwriting, experimental folk and indie music.

We’re excited to celebrate the release of Beautiful Zameen! Join us at one of two book launches with Jagdeep Raina, Jhani Randhawa, designer Steph Yates, and Curtis Walker as they discuss the artwork and the book, and watch a rare screening of the short film Punjab: Land of the Five Drying Rivers by Sirjaut Kaur Dhariwal.

Toronto - September 30, 5 - 7 pm at Cooper Cole Gallery (1134 Dupont Street)
Guelph - October 1, 7 - 9 pm at PS Guelph (6 Dublin Street South)

The collection Beautiful Zameen presents short essays, poetry, and a letter nestled between full-colour prints of Jagdeep Raina’s gorgeous embroidery works. Raina’s art series of the same name is inspired by research into India’s Green Revolution — a U.S. sponsored agricultural initiative whose effects are still being felt 80 years after its inception. Raina’s works depict farmers and their families, flora and fauna, and hands that hold crops and photographs, fusing his research with an ancestral material practice. He treats his subjects with care and commemoration, drawing attention to the everyday lived experiences and losses related to the Green Revolution, which was also the catalyst to an exodus of migrants to North America and the United Kingdom. With illuminating essays by Satinder Kaur Chohan and Jhani Randhawa, and poetry by both Randhawa and Raina, this book serves as documentation of Raina’s intricate textile works, and an exploration of the complex histories that have informed many artists’ interest in the Green Revolution archives.

Join us at All Saints “After Dark” on Thursday, September 17th at 7pm for an evening of genre-bending, intimate sound. Cots, the solo project of Canadian composer Steph Yates, weaves bossa nova, tropicalia, folk, jazz, and classical influences into subtly unconventional pieces for nylon-string guitar and voice. Sharing the bill is Days of Lavender, Vancouver’s meditative electronic soul pop duo, whose dreamy, love-born collaboration blends Ableton-driven basslines with soulful vocals. Come experience two distinct sonic worlds under one roof.
