Unreasonably optimistic human gatherer. My labors of love: @creativemorning, @friendsworkhere & @teuxdeuxapp. My story:
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
After 5 wonderfully creative and productive years being a studiomate at @friendsworkhere I made the super sh-tty decision to give up my desk. The first few photos are from when I was clearing out all my stuff. So many emotions. The reason for making this decision is pure math (in typical artist fashion, I. hate. doing. math... but like our NY Governor Cuomo told us in COVID response: follow the numbers).⠀
.⠀
My work had slowed a bit before the pandemic, which was typical for the winter season, but since March it slowed too much to continue to comfortably pay my monthly rent for the desk. For now, my new “studio” will be the IKEA table in our living room (see photo 4). Mona will continue be the world’s cutest yet also most annoying studiomate. Somehow, I’ve been working at this table since March while the studio was closed. Working around my family is no easy task, as many of you are also enduring (this is also the table where we eat every meal, and do other random daily things) but, after some mourning and a rosé-fueled pity party, I realized I created a lot of work on this little IKEA table in the past few months: 50 Paintings Project, Thank You Nurses series, View From My Run, a few commissions, and started my IG Live doodle class.⠀
.⠀
I was telling a friend last night that giving up my desk at the studio is like my unexpected side cramp during Mile 17 of the 2019 NYC Marathon. After 16 miles of holding a steady pace, the cramp came out of nowhere. It never, ever happened in training. It HURT! I had to slow down and walk for a bit, and I had a decision to make. Do I allow the cramp to ruin my day? Do I give up? Of course not. I shuffled through it until it passed and kept going to the finish line. It wasn’t the race day plan I imagined or wanted, and I totally missed my goal time. But it was what the day gave me and I had to figure out a way through it. Mile 17 wound up being my proudest race moment ever. Onward!

Being in the (Zoom) room where it happens. Such a fun “morning” with the @creativemorning team for the @newyork_cm event with Jocelyn Glei. They sure know how to throw a great online event! 🎉
The music by @treyalam was beautiful, the pre-show was great, the talk so inspiring. It was such a joy to see so many faces I recognized in the room. ✨

Here’s the manifesto I had the honor of reading:

Everyone is creative.
A creative life requires bravery and action, honesty and hard work. We are here to support you, celebrate with you, and encourage you to make the things you love.

We believe in the power of community. We believe in giving a damn. We believe in face-to-face connections, in learning from others, in jazz hands, virtual claps, and virtual snaps.

We bring together people who are driven by passion and purpose, confident that they will inspire one another, and inspire change in neighborhoods and cities around the world.

Everyone is welcome.

This quote about selling from @swissmiss has stuck with us for years. ⠀
⠀
I think it's only natural when you're starting out in business to feel a little uneasy about promoting your work and asking others to pay you for your products or services. ⠀
⠀
But once you are able to change your mindset from "I'm taking someone's money" to "they're gifting me their support and they value what I offer"...things change. ⠀
⠀
Selling is an offering of enthusiasm. ⠀
⠀
If you believe in what you're doing, don't be shy about sharing it. ⠀
⠀
Inside our Un-Boring Coaching Program this month, we are focusing an entire month on getting more confidence with selling and really releasing those mindset limitations that are holding you back from hitting sustainable revenue with your business. ⠀

Taking procrastination to new heights. Thanks @swissmiss @laramaju and @tattly for allowing me to pursue a tattoo minus the commitment. Because I’m afraid of needles.

I’ve been hungrily following these humans for years as I’ve been trying to understand the complexity of wanting to be mom while unlearning and healing the narrative that my only purpose in life was to be a wife and mother. Since childhood my worth has been distilled down to my virginity and fertility. But I had so many things I wanted to do with my life, so many people I wanted to love, so many identities to untangle. So I decided I’d never be a mom. It was a sadness I accepted and chose. The grief of never being a parent seem small in comparison to the worn sadness I saw etched in the hollow figures presenting to me as good submissive and selfless women.
But over the years a broader definition of parenthood began forming in my head. And I built a list of folks breaking down stereotypes and narratives of what it means to be a person, an artist, a caregiver. These are just a few of the beings I’ve been taking note of over the years. I’m so grateful for the ways they show up in the world, for their varied expressions of gender, sexuality, beliefs and ways of becoming a parent. Cheers to all the ways we can be apart of growing and tending to the next generation. Cheers to therapy and queerness and representation and forging new ways of being in the world. Amen.
