Pain that isn’t faced gets handed down.

Many fathers were raised by men who didn’t speak about what they felt. Control, anger, violence and silence became the inheritance passed from one generation to the next.

I can’t rewrite what came before me.

But I can decide what continues through me.

For me, breaking the cycle means telling the truth, repairing the harm I’ve caused, asking for help and showing my son another way to be a man.

It stops with me.

What ends with you?

We keep telling boys to step up.

But who are they meant to follow?

Boys need good men around them
not perfect men, but men who are present, honest and willing to take responsibility when they get it wrong.

Becoming a father made my own work non-negotiable.

My son won’t only remember what I told him. He is learning from how I live, how I treat people and how I respond when life becomes difficult.

The work of fatherhood begins with ourselves.

Which boy is learning from the way you live?

I didn’t begin changing because I felt ready.

I changed because life hit me with a big enough stick.

Eventually I had to stop defending myself and admit: “I’ve got a problem.”

The rebuilding didn’t happen through one dramatic breakthrough. It happened through small decisions, one honest conversation, one uncomfortable step and one percent at a time.

Every new level has required me to leave behind a version of myself that once felt safe.

Through the discomfort is the freedom.

What is your discomfort asking you to face?

What we leave unsaid doesn’t disappear.

It grows in the silence between us.

I learned this in my own relationships. Avoiding the difficult conversation might create temporary comfort, but eventually that silence becomes distance.

Telling the truth doesn’t mean being brutal. It means speaking honestly, taking responsibility for your part and being willing to stay in the conversation.

The truth can be uncomfortable.

But what remains unspoken can divide families.

What conversation have you been avoiding?

The first time I sat in a circle of men run by @mike_dyson__ and told the full truth, I didn’t know how it would be received.

I took off the mask and put everything on the table.

What came back wasn’t judgement. The men saw me. They accepted me. They celebrated the courage it took to be honest.

I realised I had never experienced that kind of brotherhood before.

Men don’t always need to be fixed or given advice. Sometimes we need a place where we can stop performing and finally be seen.

Where in your life can you take off the mask?

When Slade asked me, “What’s your intention for today?”, my answer ultimately came back to one thing:

Ownership.

For me, healthy masculinity begins with taking responsibility for every step that brought me to where I am.

That doesn’t mean carrying all the blame or pretending other people’s choices didn’t affect me. It means being radically honest about my part where I stayed silent, avoided the truth, abandoned myself or waited for someone else to change.

I’m still learning this. I’m still living it.

But the moment I take ownership, I stop treating my life as something that is merely happening to me. I recover my ability to choose what happens next.

That is where rebuilding begins.

What part of your life are you ready to take full ownership of?
