FAITH — FAMILY — FISHING

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Only had about 45 minutes today but made the most of it. Graduating from Purdue in just over a month and searching for new houses where I’ll start my career. Big life changes, but God, the gym and the outdoors are always consistent.

Honestly, who doesn’t love walleye! I don’t often catch walleye, so when I do I like to prepare this fish in a more elaborate manner than my classic fish fry. I’ve also had an amazing fish cakes recipe but I would rather try to recreate that dish with something like carp.

Start this dish by adding 1-2” chunks of red potatoes to boiling water. Add salt, garlic cloves, and butter if you choose. This will take the length of the meal to prepare the potatoes so start here.

Next, in a pan add a stick of butter and your asparagus. Have this simmer until the asparagus starts wilting and browning on the end. After this is achieved remove the asparagus from the pan and let drain of excess butter. Once drained, place in tinfoil to keep warm.

Add your lemon-pepper walleye fillets (another fish would have been ideal) to the butter in your skillet with some minced garlic. Keep warm by marinating in warm skillet butter. If you don’t burn your butter or garlic (I might have..) in the cooking process, use this for your mashed potatoes.

Strain red potatoes and mash them how you see fit, I won’t judge. Add your butter and your cream of choice. Sour cream, cottage cheese or Greek yogurt. I used cottage cheese in this situation out of convenience, (plus the additional protein benefit for splitting one little Wally). Add salt and pepper to taste and you’re done.

Serve the fish on a bed of mashed potatoes, a pile of asparagus, and a fresh cut lemon wedge. It was hard to not inhale the fish immediately. Could have scaled back on the butter potentially but damn was it good.

Happy Gar Week! This week is dedicated to our prehistoric, toothy fish friends! Did you know that the Wabash River is home to 3 different gar species? The Shortnose gar (Lepisosteus platostomus), Longnose gar (Lepisosteus osseus), and Spotted gar (Lepusosteus oculatus) all call the mighty Wabash River home. Gar are known for their long, slender bodies and skinny sharp teeth and are the only suriving species in a family of bony fishes that appeared over 240 million years ago. After the Spotted gar with the top hat (he wanted to dress up special since it is his week), there is photos of gar that were caught by local anglers on the Wabash River and in our watershed! #GarWeek #welovepreshistoricfishspecies

Pretty eventful evening here at college. Close run in with a state record sauger(my suspicions were correct and it was a saugeye) at 5 pound 13 ounces. Caught my first decent flathead and smacked a whole bunch of line-siders this evening. All in all good day to start off February
