✨ Another month, another goodbye. ✨

This week we wrapped up with yet another incredible group of students who brought intelligence, curiosity, and endless enthusiasm to every field day. Always ready to ask questions, lend a hand, and dive headfirst into the experience – they’ve made a lasting mark here at Oceans. 💙

We’re so grateful to have shared this time with you, and we can’t wait to see where your passion for the ocean takes you next. 🌊

Same time next year😉

Yesterday our students got to experience Robberg in all its glory! 🦭✨ Guided by our Head Field Specialist, Lacey Williams, they got a taste of the research she once carried out for her MSc—studying seal and shark behaviour. Even without great white sharks in the bay right now, it was all about adventure and discovery as each student explored and recorded different behaviours from the bustling seal colony.

Threatened species alert!

Yesterday one of our students caught a gorgeous female smooth-hound shark (Mustelus mustelus) using a hand line on our research vessel!

Seeing this species in Mossel Bay is such a special, and hope-providing experience. Mustelus mustelus is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, often the victim of demersal long-line fishing boats.

As well as being a target for many fishing vessels, they are one of the main prey species for white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias), making them a crucial part of our ecosystem!

Seeing this beautiful female and being able to perform a morphometric assessment on her was a super special experience and gives us hope for future population bounce-back.

What an exciting introduction to fishing for our August students!

One thing that comes with working in the field is accepting the unpredictability of the environment!

🦀Sometimes tides aren't as low as expected leading to difficult but hilarious intertidal assessment shifts.

🌊Sometimes the sea is rough, reminding us of the true power of the oceans we love so much.

🌬️Sometimes the breeze is exceptionally strong, leading to messy hair and attempts to shout over the whistling wind.

That is the true beauty of field work and what comes with choosing to dedicate our lives to an ever-changing and highly dynamic ecosystem.

So get soaked, shout, laugh, shiver, hold on tight, and embrace it! We PROMISE it's worth it!

How lucky am I to have found a place that is this difficult to say goodbye to?

@oceansresearch you have been so good to me 💝

July, you’ll be hard to forget. 💙

To this month’s incredible group of students — thank you.

Thank you for showing up with energy and curiosity, even when the days were long, the wind was howling, and the tide wasn’t exactly in our favour. You jumped in (sometimes literally), asked the right questions, stayed eager through early mornings and tricky conditions, and brought your full selves to every task.

You reminded us why we do this.
It’s been a privilege to explore the ocean with you — and I hope it stays with you, long after your boots dry.

Wishing you all the best on your journeys ahead — stay curious, stay salty, and never stop asking questions.

🔍Get egg-cited to ID!🔎

Our students are able to collect data on the reproductive success and population structure of local Chondrichthyans through our egg case analysis project!

After a long day of collecting egg cases, students learn to rehydrate and identify source species using dichotomous keys and record evidence of biofouling, predation, and hatch success.

This gives key insight into the reproductive habits of many different Chondrichthyan species, from charismatic catsharks to alien-looking St Joseph shark!

Some common species identified include:

🐆Leopard catsharks (Poroderma pantherinium)

🐯Tiger catsharks (Halaelurus natalensis)

🐘Cape elephantfish/St. Joseph’s shark (Callorhinchus milii)

👯‍♀️Twineyed/brown skates (Raja miraletus)

Stay tuned to see what species we find!

Have you seen any recently? Let us know where and what species in the comments!
