Happy International Women’s day! If you know me, you might know that I am verrrry wary of encouraging an identity around a company. Even as a co-founder and partner of our 6 year old design studio, @shoppetheory, I often hesitate to talk about our “company” and our “culture” because I don't want to be *that* founder (the startup world REALLY did a number on me y'all, but that’s a story for another day). But today, I want to give an unabashed shoutout to my business partner @junelettersstudio and our team of kickass women at Shoppe Theory: @munbeibi @shihoaokidesigns @sydopia @rachelrianne.

I’ve seen many founders champion “female empowerment” as a company value, only to tear women down in pursuit of profit, business goals, and protecting egos. I’ve experienced painful disconnects between professed ideals and actual company culture, and in retrospect, I don’t think it’s because leaders are deliberately lying about the values, but because it’s not an easy task to align values and practice, especially when it comes to "empowering" one another at work.

So, it makes me feel all the more grateful to work with a team of women that I feel truly empowered by. This is not accomplished by some “top down” values messaging (only if it were that easy) but through a concerted effort by each one of us to bring our patience and willingness to understand, collaborate, and encourage one another, not only as teammates but also as individuals. I feel so incredibly blessed to work and grow in that kind of environment and I thank each and every one of you for cultivating such a dynamic over the years.

I know that we will not be a team at Shoppe Theory forever (because that’s just how life goes) but I hope that Shoppe Theory is a place of joy and power in each of our journeys!

And... using the illustration I made last year again because that reality is we don't have a team photo and many of us haven't actually met IRL 😅
