Being able to speak and use one's language is a human right - yet, the world's linguistic diversity is decreasing at an alarming rate. With each language that dies out, unique worldviews, lifestyles, literatures and histories disappear.

On this International Mother Language Day, we shed a light on some experiences and stories by speakers of marginalized languages.
@asteramortezai is an Iranian Kurdish artist who moved to the Netherlands years ago to be able to practice her arts in freedom.

@opeyemioab, a Yoruba-speaker from Nigeria, is a passionate researcher of Nigerian languages and history, and an active promoter of teaching Yoruba at @soroniyoruba. Richard Simcott (@speakingfluently) is one of the world's greatest polyglots, and shares his insights on Welsh, the language of his home country.

Lastly, Mohammed is a member of @syloti, an awareness initiative to preserve Sylheti, a language split by the India-Bangladesh border that has been threatened since colonial times.

What is your native language? How do you celebrate it? And did you ever experience discrimination based on your native language? Let us know in the comments below.

Sylheti, a Mother Tongue to estimated 11-13 million speakers. Listed on top 100 most spoken language in the world. Disputed over whether it’s an independent language or a dialect ?

#Sylheti was recognized as an Independent Language prior to 1971, however due to the independence of East #Pakistan which is said to be took place in the name of language #Bangla, following Bangladesh declared Bangla as the National & Official #Language of Bangladesh in which the Standard Version is widely spoken only in #Dhaka and nearby areas.

Whereas 98% of Bangladeshi’s can speak in Standard Bangla due to educational factor but not as their first language. The other different mother tongues in Bangladesh are not officially recognized as they’re all generally known as the dialect of #Bengali. Which results in people worldwide think only “Bangla” is spoken in #Bangladesh.

While many believe Sylheti is an independent language, it is also a #Tonal Language. The Indo-Aryan languages are not generally recognised for tone. Sylheti is also a Tonal Language alongside with #Punjabi from the Indo-Aryan family.

There are two types of tonal contrasts in Sylheti, the emergence of high tone in the vowels following the loss of aspiration, and a level tone elsewhere. For example

• Khali [level] Ink
• Khali [high] Empty
• Suri [level] Theft
• Suri [high] Knife
