@sylvainlabs has rebuilt @etsy’s identity around the square.⁠ ⁠ Rooted in the strategy ‘A starting point for special,’ the square works as both a functional container and a symbol of Etsy as a gateway to discovery. Inside it sits a refined wordmark set in Otto, a serif chosen for its warmth and craft-like character. The lowercase ‘y’ has been straightened to sit more naturally within the square frame.⁠ ⁠ From there, the square generates the entire system: a glyph set built from the wordmark’s own proportions, graphic and photo silhouettes celebrating Etsy’s product range, motion behaviours that scale and reveal from the logo, and an extended palette that supports the iconic orange. As far as the Eye can Etsy • New Logo and Identity for @etsy by @sylvainlabs — 🧑‍💼 ABOUT THE CLIENT Established in 2005, Etsy is a two-sided online marketplace that connects independent sellers with buyers around the world, offering a wide selection of creative goods ranging from unique, handcrafted pieces to hard-to-find, vintage treasures. Headquartered in Brooklyn, NY, with additional offices in Dublin, London, and Mexico City, its 2,400-plus employees help more than 8.7 million sellers and 93.5 million buyers connect over more than 100 million listings. Among those millions in the stats you can find me (and Bryony) as we’ve been shopping on Etsy for as long as I can remember and while, over the years, a glut of commercial sellers offering neither hand-crafted pieces nor vintage treasures have come along, it’s still one of the few online sites where you can find truly unique (and affordable) items. • 🦸 FROM SYLVAIN “First, we evolved Etsy’s logo around the most elemental shape: the square. The square is a functional container, but also a reflection of Etsy as the place to begin discovering unique pieces from around the world, as well as connecting with the humans behind them. It’s as if the logo were a button you could press to be right there with them. Inside it sits a bespoke wordmark, generous in its serif curves and playful proportions of each letterform.
