EFHOH leadership meeting, Brussels, January 2025

Today is like my birthday. It is about me and my community. Happy International Day of Hard of Hearing!

Because of @lidia.smolarekbest , I went to the @efhoh.eu study sessions, where I met, for the first time, people with the same disability as me, but from all around the world.

At first, I thought we were all the same, that there was nothing particularly interesting about us. Oh… well… how wrong I was: As we spent time together, talking, learning, sharing our experiences, and simply enjoying each other’s presence, I realized that even I, because of my past, had let society tell me how we SHOULD look.

We are often seen through stereotypes if we are seen at all. Most of the time, society forgets about hard of hearing people. But when people do notice us, they often assume we are all the same. And yet, the reality is so different...

For example, I used to think there were only two types of hearing aids: the ones like mine and cochlear implants. But there, I discovered so many more. And the most impressive part? Some people decorated theirs like jewellery! The way we communicate was also fascinating. Some spoke, some used sign language; but even sign language varies between countries. Personally, I do not know sign language, but I think I picked up a little there.

And the most comforting part? The moment when we all took our hearing aids off when we were tired because wearing them all day is not easy, for once, there was no one telling us we were "too loud" when we talked.

It is a whole different universe, one I had not fully seen before.

So today, on this special day, I want to break the stereotypes, starting with mine. We are so diverse, and I want people to see us more. Because we are out there, so many of us, often hiding, because we can... but it should not be that way.

The people of Georgia have been protesting in the streets for 75 consecutive days.
Starting on October 28, 2024, protesters took to the streets to demonstrate against the fraudulent parliamentary election announced by the Georgian Dream Party.
A Russian puppet party, the Georgian Dream Party held an election with one party and one person to vote for. The party seeks to eliminate any opportunity the Georgian people have to join the European Union, despite this being the will of the people. Instead, the Georgian Dream Party would rather guide the future of the country down the path written by Putin.
The media has been silent on these protests from the beginning, the people of Georgia do not give up, their resistance is inspiring and we stand with the people of Tbilisi. ✊🇬🇪
*much of this footage has been found online, many thanks to tata_vladii on threads for much of this footage and their coverage of the protests from DAY ONE.
