Chapter 8 of 8

Leadership has taught me that the position may put you in charge, but service is what makes you a leader.

Serving others first doesn’t mean lowering the standard. It means caring enough to help people reach it. Listen. Support. Challenge. Empower. And when you get to the top, reach back and help someone else climb up.

Because when people start lifting each other, a group becomes a team.

And that’s when the TEAM WINS.

Chapter 7 of 8

Leadership has taken me places I never expected, and not always by the path I originally planned.

Over the years, I’ve learned that growth sometimes requires changing direction. The plan that made sense yesterday may not be the one that gets you where you need to go tomorrow. Great leaders recognize when it’s time to adjust, but they also understand that everyone won’t adapt at the same pace.

Change doesn’t always mean abandoning the destination. Sometimes it simply means finding a better way to get there, while giving the people you lead the space and confidence to find their way too…

Chapter 6 of 8

There are moments in leadership that no one applauds. No promotion. No award. No recognition. Just a decision between taking the easy path or doing what’s right.

From the football field to the bridge of a warship and now leading Sailors ashore, I’ve learned that integrity isn’t built in the spotlight. It’s truly built in the quiet decisions no one else sees. Those moments help shape your character longgg before they shape your reputation.

Leadership isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being consistent. When your values become your standard, you don’t have to wonder who you’ll be under pressure… because you’ve already decided.

Chapter 5 of 8

The most memorable lessons I’ve learned didn’t come during moments of success. They came during seasons of uncertainty, failure, and adversity.

From Plebe Year at the Naval Academy to leading Sailors through the challenges of a global pandemic, I learned that storms are inevitable. What defines a leader isn’t avoiding the rough waters, it’s remaining steady while guiding others through them.

The storms we face don’t have to weaken us. They can strengthen our character, deepen our resilience, and prepare us for whatever comes next…

Chapter 4 of 8

Some of the most “motivating” moments in my life didn’t come from hype or speeches. They came from leaders who helped me see a purpose greater than myself and challenged me to become more than I thought I could be.

As I’ve grown in leadership, I’ve realized excitement can get people moving, but purpose and commitment are what keep them going. Great leaders don’t just create moments of inspiration… they build environments where motivation can sustain, with or without their guidance.

Chapter 2 of 8

Some of my greatest growth came when leaders trusted me with responsibility before I felt ready for it.

Years later, I’ve seen that same growth occur when empowering others. Whether as a Junior Officer or now as a Commanding Officer, one lesson remains true:

Empowerment develops people… Some of the confidence I carry today came from leaders who trusted me before I fully trusted myself.

Every winning TEAM I’ve ever been a part of has had one thing in common:

They trusted the process before they saw the results…

I’m talking football fields to open seas, locker rooms to wardrooms, I’ve learned that the strongest teams don’t need every answer before they commit to the mission.

This quote comes from Chapter 1 of my upcoming book:

TEAM WINS: The Leader’s Guide to Winning

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing the principles that have shaped my journey as an athlete, father, Naval officer, and leader of teams.

This is more than a book to me. It is a framework built on lessons learned through victory, adversity, leadership, and service. A framework designed to help leaders build stronger teams, lasting cultures, and better outcomes.

TEAM WINS.

We’re just getting started.
