Eight years ago ,after suffering a ruptured brain aneurysm and being in a coma for two weeks @keckmedicineusc Keck hospital at the University of Southern California,I woke from that coma.

This little reminder hung on the side of my hospital bed.

At the beginning of my recovery journey , on those dark days in that hospital room, we’re at times it seemed impossible to have those sunny days again, this little reminder gave me that extra hope I needed.

And by the looks of the second picture, with gods grace, those sunny days found me again ☀️ 😊🙏🏻

We all go through so much in life at times. This is my reminder to you. That although getting out of those tough situations might seem impossible at times, it is indeed POSSIBLE.

You will be ok…. I promise you 🫶🏻😊

this is what pure joy looks like. What have we been doing with our Iives you ask? Well, kicking butt at stroke recovery. ☺️

Strokes take so many different forms, and no two recoveries look the same. But my survivor friend Dave and I have a lot in common: we both wear the Bioness for foot drop, we’re both putting in the work on our hands, and we both have big goals for our mobility and hand function. Every step and every rep counts. 🦶✋
One of the best parts of this journey is the stroke community. Whether you’re in New York, California, or halfway around the world, there’s someone out there who gets it. Finding each other makes the hard days lighter and the wins even sweeter. 💜
Dave, thank you for the walk and the inspiration. Here’s to the next milestone!

🎗️ ONE YEAR. ONE INCREDIBLE FIGHTER. A MILLION REASONS TO BE PROUD. 🎗️

October 17th marked ONE YEAR since Jayson’s AVM brain bleed.

And let me tell you… WHAT A CRAZY RIDE IT HAS BEEN! 😮‍💨❤️

There have been moments of fear, tears, uncertainty, and days when we had no idea what tomorrow would look like.

Looking back at everything Jayson has overcome and accomplished in just one year is incredible.
From losing his speech, learning to communicate again, and fighting through the challenges this brain bleed left behind, to every little milestone that has brought us to where we are today.

This journey hasn’t been easy, and the fight isn’t over. There is still work to do, more strength to build, and more milestones to chase. But today, we celebrate just how far he has come. 💚

And the best part? WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE THE ENDING! 🤩😭

Jayson, you have accomplished more in this past year than words could ever explain. You are our warrior, our fighter, and one of the strongest people I know.

An Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) is an abnormal tangle of dysplastic blood vessels where arterial blood flows directly into veins without a normal capillary bed. Securing complete closure is critical, as ruptured AVMs carry a severe annual risk of rebleeding, with each hemorrhage posing up to a 50% risk of permanent neurological morbidity or a 10% risk of mortality. Fortunately, advanced endovascular embolization can serve as a definitive, curative treatment, permanently eliminating this dangerous bleeding risk.

Case presentation:
A 45-year-old patient presented with vomiting, seizures, and left-sided weakness. An initial brain MRI revealed a right intracerebral hematoma, while MRA imaging indicated a suspected AVM. A subsequent cerebral angiography confirmed a right-sided AVM supplied by the right anterior cerebral artery (ACA) and draining into the superior sagittal sinus (SSS). He underwent total embolization using onyx and lava

التشوه الشرياني الوريدي هو تشابك غير طبيعي في الأوعية الدموية حيث يتدفق الدم الشرياني مباشرة إلى الأوردة دون المرور بشبكة الشعيرات الدموية الطبيعية. يُعد الغلق الكامل لهذا التشوه أمراً بالغ الأهمية، حيث تحمل التشوهات المتمزقة خطراً سنوياً عالياً للنزيف المتكرر، ويمثل كل نزيف خطراً يصل إلى 50% للإصابة بمضاعفات عصبية دائمة أو خطر الوفاة بنسبة 10%. لحسن الحظ، يمكن أن تعمل قسطرة المخ العلاجية كعلاج نهائي وفعال، مما يقضي تماماً على خطر النزيف المستقبلي.

الحالة:
حضر مريض يبلغ من العمر 45 عاماً يعاني من قيء، نوبات تشنجية، وضعف في الجانب الأيسر من الجسم. أظهرت أشعة الرنين المغناطيسي للمخ وجود تجمع دموي داخل أنسجة المخ في الجهة اليمنى، بينما أشار تصوير الأوعية بالرنين المغناطيسي إلى اشتباه في وجود تشوه شرياني وريدي. بعد ذلك، أكدت قسطرة المخ التشخيصية وجود تشوه شرياني وريدي في الجهة اليمنى يتغذى من الشريان المخي الأمامي الأيمن ويصرف الدم في الجيب السهمي العلوي. وتم غلق التمدد الشرياني بالكامل عن طريق المواد المخثرة (onyx and lava) #avm #neuroendovascularsurgery #ahmednada #radialfirst

October is AVM Awareness Month, so it feels like the right time to share something I’ve kept close for a long time.

When I was diagnosed with a brain AVM, I started filming everything. Partly because I was scared I wouldn’t remember it all. Partly because I didn’t know how this would end.

This video holds my most vulnerable moments. The fear, the treatment, the waiting, the days that felt endless. It’s not polished and it’s not easy to watch, but it’s real.

Today I’m almost AVM free. I’m still waiting on my final angiogram for the official all clear, but I’m closer than I ever dared to hope.

And I know I was lucky. So many people have been hit much harder by this, and some didn’t make it. I carry that with me. I’m only where I am today because of all the beautiful people who helped me through this. The doctors, nurses, my loved ones and everyone who showed up for me in big and small ways. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. 🥹♥️

I’m sharing this for anyone who just heard those three letters for the first time, or for someone who loves a person going through it. You’re not alone, and it’s okay to be scared.🫶🏻

If this reaches even one person who needs it, it was worth it. 💜

“AVMs are rare. Somewhere around 10 to 18 out of every 100,000 people have a brain AVM. Most are thought to form while the brain is developing, which is why we often say people are born with them. But many people don’t find out until their teens, twenties, or thirties.

When an AVM does cause symptoms, the most common first sign is bleeding. The second most common is a seizure. Headaches and weakness can happen too. And a lot of AVM’s are found by accident on a scan done for something else.”

My AVM ruptured coincidentally while I was visiting my mom in the hospital. I told her I had to leave because I had the worst headache of my life. I drove home (yep) and went into the bathroom, because I felt like I was going to throw up.

My roommate found me on the floor unresponsive and called 911. The EMT’s did a sternal rub on my chest, but I was still unresponsive. They took me back to St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, MD where my Mom was.

They did a CT Scan at St. Agnes and confirmed I had an AVM with an angio gram when they transferred me to Johns Hopkins hospital.

I had Radio-surgery on March 19th, 1996 at Hopkins after spending a month having the blood drained from the bleed. “It is focused radiation that slowly scars the AVM shut over about two to three years. It works well for small AVM’s in hard-to-reach spots, but it can still bleed while you wait.” We found out mine was gone in January of 2000 almost 4 years later.💃🏽

Most AVMs are diagnosed between the ages of 10 & 40. I was 23.

“A sudden “worst headache of your life,” a first-time seizure, or sudden weakness is a reason to call 911 right away. Don’t wait it out. It could save your life.”
