Procedural fairness is fundamental for fairness in decision making.

Those seeking to undermine procedural fairness should be treated with suspicion.

Thank you to @sisters_inside_inc and @debkilroy for keeping track of the revolting torture that occurred over the weekend. If you haven’t heard, an incarcerated Aboriginal woman was shackled while giving birth in Queensland. The video on slide two was taken last week at a press conference ahead of the vote to end shackling during childbirth. Labor, you were warned that this abuse happened. You let it continue.

A museum of death and abuse. Gladesville Lunatic Asylum.

This now closed “lunatic asylum” stank of death and abuse, with over 1200 people buried onsite without a grave.

While the mechanisms have changed, state violence under the guise of “care” still exists.

Activism drives accountability!

Let’s hold these scumbags to account, those who misuse and abuse power for their own agendas!

There’s a raft of low cost informal mechanisms that can have high impact when organised strategically.

Just like putting assault rifles in the hands of cops on our streets, arming kids with pepper spray does not create safer communities.

More weapons = less safety.

Ending violence against women cannot be conditional on whether a woman is considered respectable, deserving or worthy of protection.

Human rights do not stop at the prison gate. Bodily autonomy does not disappear when a woman is imprisoned.

Children do not lose their right to dignity because the state has labelled them “offenders”.

If Labor and the LNP are serious about ending violence against women, they must be prepared to confront it wherever it occurs — including within the institutions they govern.

Many women in Parliament let us down today by voting against @senatorthorpe Bills to end the shackling of pregnant people and those giving birth and ending the strip searching of children. So much for feminism and ending violence against women.

Strip searching is sexual assault by the State.

Nothing about us without us. No more violence hidden behind prison walls.

In the words of National Network member, Tanika…

The legislation is before the Senate today. We’ll be there watching the vote, taking names and grabbing the receipts

Shameful to see the Minister for Women justify the continued shackling of women giving birth. The inquiry showed that the Commonwealth has power to stop this. People need to realise that when the Albanese government calls this a state and territory issue, that’s not a legal argument, it’s a choice they are making.
