Bye Bye Blondie 👋🏼
•
Selfies are not normally my thing, nor is expecting everyone to care about every little thing in my world, but a friend reached out after seeing my recent hair change and said she wished she could have been apart of the p r o c e s s of my hair transformation. And I realized I relate and personally love hearing the same for others too. Because she hit the nail on the head - with change, it is always a process and something under the surface of what our eyes can see. And sometimes it is in witnessing others’ transformations and relating to them that we find strength ourselves. So, this one is for you, @tacomadome - and any others who can relate to the intrigue of the process of the things.
•
My blonde season was one that I loved and enjoyed deeply - so deeply I wonder if I’m vain sometimes for how seriously I take my self expression. But also, I don’t think it is vanity to care about our appearance because it is also what shapes how we see ourselves, how we respect ourselves, how we learn to love and accept ourselves - how to grow with the reality of change instead of crumbling amidst it.
•
For me, this particular change was one I both wanted, and didn’t. I went blonde during a season where I deeply wanted to see myself differently. I wanted to feel free, I wanted to feel fun, I wanted so much change in my personal life that I also drastically needed to change my appearance as a way of communicating to myself that I had agency to control the change that I wanted on the surface, but in hindsight, to transform my life into more than what had settled for.
•
I needed a physical reminder that I was the only one in charge of my life. And my hair was one of the biggest, boldest ways to proclaim that - even if it was just to myself.
•
Fast forward three years - I now know this in my bones. I remember it without needing to see it in such a drastic way every day when I look in the mirror. Now when I look in the mirror, I need to remember my roots - no pun intended 😜 I need to remember my personhood lies in my soul and my willingness to be real. In my love for myself and my people. In my bare bones medium brown locks.

So here we are.. cont’d ⬇️
