“We’re going to cool our pool down to about 35 degrees, and I need you to sit in the bottom of it for eight to 10 hours.”

Brad Geary, former Navy SEAL captain, on testing a new high-tech wetsuit when even the Navy’s diving experts had no data on whether it was possible.

Could you last 10 hours?

Eleven and a half hours underwater.

That was his longest dive. A guy from his BUD/S class did fourteen.

Captain Brad Geary spent 25 years in Naval Special Warfare, and in this one he gets into what nobody sees. Submarine deployments with no way to call home. Water-level reconnaissance. Stay-behind sabotage.

Sometimes, you get to see part of the training in front of The Shores, of what is called “Hell Week.”

🇺🇸 Hell Week is the fourth week of the first phase of Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training.

The Navy describes Hell Week as a controlled, extremely stressful environment intended to simulate some of the pressures candidates may encounter in combat. It has been some of the most demanding military training in the world for generations.

Candidates are subjected to enormous amounts of running, swimming, carrying boats and equipment, obstacle courses, teamwork exercises, and other physical evolutions that can be extremely dangerous. A tradition in Coronado that goes back more than 80 years.

The idea is that extreme circumstances reveal characteristics that ordinary training cannot.

The Navy has specifically emphasized teamwork, perseverance, character, and humility in its special warfare selection training.

Most people associate Coronado with the Hotel del Coronado, the beach, The Shores, sunsets, tourism, and the beautiful village atmosphere. But immediately alongside that world is a place where young sailors are deliberately pushed to their physical and psychological limits in pursuit of becoming Navy SEALs.

Thank you for your service.
