The Calder Micro Residencies #1

This was the first time a residency was carried out in our basement and it definitely won’t be the last 🛋️

Artific-onnect took over the space in a dialogue between a performer (@tacychang), a guest, and a machine. This dialogue creates an opportunity to connect in movement with someone else, and a machine. The whole interaction was short, but enough to create a connection with the performer and question how little we connect with strangers in our day-to-day, and how easy we might connect with a machine instead. These are some thoughts shared by Margarita, who took part in the 1-1 encounters. She also enjoyed having the fan as a member of the audience.

We can’t wait to see where Artific-onnect goes 📶

Thanks Tai-Hsing Chang @tacychang ☺️

3rd summer in London.

Appreciate so much to be surrounded with such group of talented lovely people that I admire and want to be like. And breathing in somewhere such close to nature.

Work in progress.
Human in progress.

Last minute addition to our August programme 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️ honestly over the moon about this!

Artific-onnect by Tai-Hsin Chang

Artific-onnect is a 1-on-1 live performance work for one performer and one stranger at a time. Twenty minutes. A room. Two bodies. It begins with a machine — and ends with something a machine cannot yet name.

The work unfolds in two movements. In the first, two people’s every gesture is guided by real-time audio prompts, which are generated by artificial intelligence. The audience is invited to decide the dance theme of the day, and the algorithm does the rest of the choreographic work. While these two people connect themselves to AI’s movement instructions, does it make them better dancers, or are they restricted by it?

Then AI steps aside. The performer turns and fully focuses on the specific person in front of them — reading their breath, their stillness, the thing they brought into the room without noticing. What follows is improvised, unrepeatable, and entirely alive to this one moment.

Artific-onnect does not argue that human connection is superior to AI-mediated interaction. It sits honestly inside that question and asks: in a world where algorithms can be tender and precise, what is it that only another person’s presence can offer?

It was an extremely hot day.

Beauty and the Beast was showing at the Hope Theatre on 20 July 2026.
I co-produced and directed this project in 2025.

The original play, '美女と野獣 Kiss Changes Everything?', was written by Sekine Shinichi(@shinichifstage ) and performed in 1996 by the Japanese LGBTQ+ theatre company, Flying Stage. The long conversation between Gloria, an extravagant drag queen who is still in the closet, and Ryuji, a former gang star with a damaged leg, was exceptional. I can't help but feel proud when people are surprised that this play has existed in Japan since the '90s.

Gareth, the co-producer, translator and adapter, was amazing and always positive. I didn't realise how easy it was to collaborate with two non-binary creatives.

Yijia, who played Gloria, was the embodiment of passion and energy. 'The One and Only' are words for you.

Chris, who played Ryuji, was skilled and full of joy for acting. I know your path will be la vie en rose.

Tai Hsin, the stage manager, was the most supportive and resourceful person. I highly recommend working with her on all theatre projects.

Although I missed all the funding opportunities, having a full audience in a sauna-like theatre during a heatwave was indescribable. Look, I just came to the UK three years ago.

Thank you to everyone who took part and supported us. I'm really looking forward to my next step!

Tian is a multidisciplinary creative. They believe there are so many beautiful stories to be told and a multitude of ways to communicate them.
Their love of dance, movement and art direction, poetry, theatre and all things digital inform their approach to storytelling.
Their long term goal is to be a writer and creative director for music videos, commercials and film (with a speciality of movement direction and choreography). They follow a ‘feeling first’ approach from Hip Hop Freestyle and contemporary movement practises.

Tai-Hsin Chang is a Taiwanese, London-based artist working across dance, physical theatre, and live art. Trained in dance, theatre performance, and production, she spent several years as a company dancer with Dance Forum Taipei, appearing on major stages across Taiwan and collaborating with international choreographers.
Alongside this, she developed a parallel practice of site-specific work, bringing performance into restaurants, apartment buildings, and open streets, and works as a dance educator facilitating arts workshops for children and adults.

Now moving from performer to independent artist, she produces and devises her own work, asking what happens when we are seen and interrogating the invisible cultural and social systems that dictate how bodies are read, valued, and desired.

Carla is an Irish actress now based in London. She has trained as an actor in Ireland and the UK her experience crosses Film, theatre and TV.
She is currently interested in exploring personal stories and verbatim theatre and how stories can be embodied

“Rossella is a versatile soul who loves every expression of art. With a Musical Theatre background and experience in drama theatre, she is passionate about connecting music, body, and acting, exploring the power that comes from bringing them together.

Her dream is to create a show of her own and travel the world with it, letting theatre become the language through which she shares her passion and love for this art.”

Jacopo is a London-based actor from Italy, trained at Rose Bruford College and The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute (LA).
He is a former actor of the international ensemble Studio K
