In April I spent 14 days in mexico becoming a dive master, something that I have been passively working towards since I began diving 20 years ago, and something I had been trying to figure out how to actually make happen in my life for the past 5 years.

I had always thought it would take me months, that I’d have to move away, take a sabbatical or quit my job, change my whole life to pursue. But it became very possible very quickly when my dad told me he was getting his instructor license and I could come along and get my dive master with him.

Me, my dad, my mom, and their two cats rented a condo in Mahahual, where I spent the next 2 weeks learning how to assistant instruct discover, open, and advanced diving courses, draw underwater maps, guide licensed divers, perfect my buoyancy, go to very deep depths safely, navigate and tie knots underwater, operate a lift bag, search for and rescue divers, recertify CPR and emergency first response, and clean, replant, and feed baby staghorn coral.

It was hard and humbling and over way too fast. It made me see diving as more than just a sport but also a someday career. It made me appreciate my life and the things I get to do for myself and with my family. It made me realize that there are friends out there who want to dive as much as I do. It made me so happy 🫧
