As a Caribbean American agency, we’re on a mission to elevate diasporic storytelling and how we show up in American media and marketing. As a yardie, the opportunity to spark dialogue with creators inspired by the @candicec_w’s Jamaican/British narrative published in 2019 was extra extra special.

🔥 This Week’s Black Creator Roundup – January 21, 2025

The creator economy never sleeps, and this week, Black creators made major waves amidst some big shake-ups. Swipe through to get caught up!

🚨 TikTok’s Ban (Slide 2)
On Saturday, TikTok went dark after a Supreme Court loss, leaving many creators scrambling. TikTok's note to everyone that logged in blamed the U.S. government suggested that Trump might save the day.

🚨 TikTok’s Ban… and Return (Slide 3)
Earlier in the week, it wasn't just TikTok fighting to save itself, but there were 8 creators involved in the suit a well, including Black creators Talia Cadet and Chris Townsend, who in an article with @capitalbnews cited the economic impacts among their primary reasons for wanting to save TikTok.

🚨 TikTok’s Return (Slide 4)
As you know, it wasn't long before TikTok returned, coming back Sunday. This time, the messaging was that Trump had indeed found a way to bring TikTok back. That's a nice way to curry some favor with TikTok's 170m fans.

🚨 Elon Buying TikTok (Slide 5)
Part of the reason for the return is the rumored belief that China may be okay with TikTok getting American ownership. The leader in the clubhouse? Elon Musk—somoene who already has deep, and some might say unbreakable, ties to China.

🚨 Black People Surge to Fanbase (Slide 6 & 7)
Amongst the fallout, several social media apps got a boost, including Fanbase, which is black-owned. The head of the app, Isaac Hayes III, made a plea for creatives, youth and Black people to join the app. Reviews were mixed all week, as people looking for a TikTok replacement didn't seem satisfied...nor patient.

🚨 But Red Note is Cool? (Slide 8 & 9)
I'm not going to say I'm disappointed, but I'm curious as to why so many of US would go to Red Note, with Terms & Conditions we cannot read, and just as questionable ownership as TikTok. No knock against them, but if it's clear the government can interfere with Chinese-based social apps, and a black-owned app exists out there, then what are we doing?

📈 Stormi Steele is Making Bank (Slide 10 & 11)
Stormi Steele had an appearance on CNBC in which she gave some impressive numbers behind her TikTokShop.

For 2 years I lived in Flatbush, a very Caribbean American part of Brooklyn, when I was an intern in medicine. I had personally trâumatizing experiences there that I wrote about in my book. 📕

It felt full circle to return for my last NYC book stop on my tour for my National Bestselling Book! 😀

The room was packed with healthcare professionals so that they could learn how to practice the 5 Vs in a healthcare setting. 👩🏾‍🔬🩺🧑🏿‍⚕️👩🏽‍⚕️👨🏿‍⚕️

I was so grateful to @dralethamaybank @blackhealthconnect @reading_rhythms and @bookshop_org for collaborating with me on this incredible event.

Meet me on tour to reclaim your joy! Comment “tour” and your ticket comes with a book!📕
