It’s a Philly thing! Thank you @bedatridc and @morganlritter for the write ups in @phillyinquirer about Philly artists in the Whitney Biennial and about my work in Times Square — both still on view! “The safest place for an artwork is a cold dark room.” One of the art conservators at the Whitney told me this during an early research visit to the museum. At the core of the art museum is a tension: the imperative to protect works of art and the mission to share them with a living, messy, unpredictable public. Here are some living, messy moments from the process and some material that never made it into this piece but... there's always the next one??? SINDRA!!! 🎀🖼️Maia Chao’s BEING MOVED opens this week🖼️🎀 Presented as part of the 2026 Whitney Biennial, BEING MOVED explores the theatricality and choreography of a museum visit in the galleries of the Whitney Museum’s permanent collection exhibition. Centering the visitor’s experience, the performance locates its subject not in the artworks themselves, but in the social rules, scripts, and patterns that condition our encounters with art. The theater and the museum are very different temples to art. The liveness of people, the value of art. The beauty of the painting, the complication of the person. Asset management, emotional management. The static object frozen in time, the temporal object disappearing before our eyes. And yet in both cases the audience makes the pilgrimage in hopes of being moved. And moved we hope you’ll be! Thank you to Maia for our collaboration, which is a big huge beautiful complicated word/verb/relationship. Extreme gratitude to our amazing cast who helped bring this show to life and for their trust in us as we worked out what the hell it is to make a show with acting, dancing, and singing (what’s that called) in the Whitney’s permanent collection.
