Percy Echols II is a Pittsburgh-based artist who received a 2025 Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh grant for a new public exhibition called “Stealing Fire, Taming Lightning,” a solo presentation of plasma and neon light sculptures.

“With this project, I want to expand understanding, visibility and access to the plasma and neon art, while strengthening creative and educational connections between artists, educators and scientists,” Echols said. “The project is inspired by cultural narratives and craft from across the African diaspora, and aims to show young people how STEAM-based programming can be both educational and inspiring.”

Exciting things are happening! 🔥
Our new Neon Shop is well on it's way to completion thanks to these awesome Ribbon Burner Blowers from Sean at @re_searchlab . Ribbon burners require a steady source of air to soften glass tubes, and these blowers are a great self-contained way to provide enough pressure for a blazing hot, wide open ribbon of flame.

Sean's easy-to-use blowers run whisper quiet, most of the noise in this video is from the ribbon burner itself or our fresh air intake fans!

Some more moments for the GAS 2026 conference in Corning, NY.

It was a weekend full of great lectures and demonstrations. I tend to focus more on the lectures these days, especially when I can learn about a subject I know nothing about.

I went to a demonstration from @perseverance_glassworks, a scientific glass worker and scientific glass instructor at Salem Community College.

At the museum, there was a show up called "Tough Stuff" about women in the earlier years of the studio glass movement. They had some of Edith Franklin's pieces from the very first Toledo workshops which is awesome to see.

Also, went to see @donlonglass demonstrate making one of his melting teapots. He's a scientific torch worker at Cornell. I'm noticing a trend in which demos I like to see.

One of the lectures that I went to was on Boshan Liuli in China presented by @yuliu_yuki. She had samples including the tools on display which satisfies a tool junkie like me.

Some of the best conference moments are reunions and catching up with people you haven't seen In a long time. I ran into some friends from my time at Illinois State University; @bee_glass_art and @taminglightning.

Also, a random piano seen at a car park in Corning.
