Percy Echols II is a Pittsburgh-based artist who received a 2025 Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh grant for a new public exhibition called “Stealing Fire, Taming Lightning,” a solo presentation of plasma and neon light sculptures.

“With this project, I want to expand understanding, visibility and access to the plasma and neon art, while strengthening creative and educational connections between artists, educators and scientists,” Echols said. “The project is inspired by cultural narratives and craft from across the African diaspora, and aims to show young people how STEAM-based programming can be both educational and inspiring.”

Introducing the Dyna-Meter: Seeing What Your Plasma Is Really Doing
Stop chasing the glow by feel. The Dyna-Meter is a portable, affordable high-voltage AC measurement kit made for plasma light sculpture—so you can see the output driving your work, dial in your gas fills, and attune your plasma driver with real measurement instead of guesswork.

It's built on Steve Ward's HV probe designs, made by hand, and this first run is limited to just 8 units.

Exciting things are happening! 🔥
Our new Neon Shop is well on it's way to completion thanks to these awesome Ribbon Burner Blowers from Sean at @re_searchlab . Ribbon burners require a steady source of air to soften glass tubes, and these blowers are a great self-contained way to provide enough pressure for a blazing hot, wide open ribbon of flame.

Sean's easy-to-use blowers run whisper quiet, most of the noise in this video is from the ribbon burner itself or our fresh air intake fans!

Remembering Jacob Fishman: The Light He Bent, Taught, and Left Behind
The neon and plasma world lost one of its beloved neon benders, artists, and teachers this month. Jacob Alan Fishman — co-founder of Lightwriters Neon, co-author of The Neon Engineers Notebook, and mentor to more artists than any of us can count — passed away on August 5th, 2026, in Chicago, at 74.

What is the ‘Weblink Backpack – Wi-fi Controller’ by James Akers?
Percy here. Meet the Weblink Backpack — a device that lets you dim and animate your neon sign right from your phone, designed by James Akers in one simple package. This compact unit connects to a Tech 22 neon transformer (or any transformer with a controller wire accepting 3.3V DC control signals), eliminating the need for a second low-voltage DC wire or any soldering.
