The best part of watching an expert work is how easy and casual they make it look, when you know how hard it really is. That ease comes from years of making mistakes, learning from them, and making fewer and fewer over time. The natural flow becomes easier through repetition. Ben at @tand.studio has that flow, and it’s as contagious as it is inspiring. Fun working with Ben and @tonyhagedorn on this personal shoot.

Our fitness mats are super METAL!

Not literally, but the vibe sure is.

The mats are actually super soft, thanks to the cotton suede topper for extra grip on top of natural rubber. Thinner than standard for extra balance.

QUARTERFINAL 3: BOWL TURNING 🌳🏆

This matchup brings together two bowl turners with very different relationships to their craft—Ben Eder of Tand Studio, who turns professionally and sells his work online and at shows, and Kevin Nilson, who turns as a hobby with his children and often gives his finished pieces to friends.

FIRST UP: Tand Studio — Ben Eder

Ben entered “After the Break,” a 7-inch calabash-style bowl turned from a highly figured Claro Walnut crotch.

The tree’s unusual growth created dense feathered grain along with natural cracks and voids throughout the piece. Rather than hiding those imperfections, Ben filled each opening with brass using a kintsugi-inspired technique—making the breaks part of the bowl’s character.

The simple calabash form keeps the focus on the contrast between the dark walnut, shifting figure, and bright brass repairs. Turned, repaired, and finished entirely by hand, the bowl preserves the marks of how the tree grew instead of trying to erase them.

THE CHALLENGER: Kevin Nilson

Kevin entered a bowl turned from what he described as “one of the most beautiful pieces I ever had”—a remarkable piece of Claro Walnut crotch-feather.

The blank had a #3 etched into it, which is how Beretta marked their blanks. It was most likely intended to become a shotgun blank but was rejected somewhere along the way, eventually finding a completely different purpose as a bowl blank.

Instead of becoming part of a gunstock, that exceptional feathered grain now lives on as a one-of-a-kind turned bowl.

I love feeling and knowing that we're all connected.

Thank to Ben from @tand.studio for making the connection that we now live in his grandparent's house and sending us the beautiful spalted maple lathe turned bowl. He makes really beautiful pieces, and got his start in our workshop in our basement!

Those glasses with the names etched in them at an estate sale. I can't make this stuff up!
