POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We attended the Saturday morning session for @designweeksouthafrica, in collaboration with @pinterest. @a33capetown hosted the session, a creative space that celebrates creativity in music, art, and cafes.

@tandekilemkize led the conversation with the panelists, joined by @erin_lee_peter_zen, @danielsherreturns, and @tee_slate. They took us through their brands’ processes, from creating employment and sustainability to collaborations and the challenges of being in the fashion industry.
Talking about brands such as @goodgoodgoodstore of @duckduckgoosestore, @researchunit, and @artclubandfriends.

3/5: Mohale’s Hoek
This one had such a great turnout, with young people there in numbers, ready to hear what the wool and mohair value chain could mean for them.

We were also glad to have @tandekilemkize of @twygmag with us on the day, listening, observing, and taking the story back to tell.

Twyg fashion editor Tandekile Mkize invites three industry voices to ask, ‘Can sustainable practices create sustainable livelihoods?’ In South Africa, ‘green’ garments are often made locally in small runs by people who are paid properly — though these are usually also the most expensive. In this conversation, Erin-Lee Petersen of Research Unit, Daniel Sher of Good Good Good and Tanya Slater of Artclub and Friends discuss balancing the urgent need for environmental responsibility with the equally pressing need to create jobs, build skills and contribute to a viable design economy.

Erin-Lee Petersen (@erin_lee_peter_zen) — Research Unit (@researchunit)
Daniel Sher (@danielsherreturns) — Good Good Good (@goodgoodgoodstore)
Tanya Slater (@tee_slate) — Artclub and Friends (@artclubandfriends)

Twyg Fashion Editor @tandekilemkize collaborated with Johannesburg-based photographer @sincerelyobby on a fashion editorial that celebrates contemporary African fashion, beauty and elegance. To compliment the intricate construction of the garments while juxtaposing their fluid construction, the duo wanted to incorporate a sculptural feature. The best way to achieve this was through sculptural braided extensions created by @jacqui_viljoen_mua that could be moulded to achieve our desired silhouette that sits on the head like a crown.

The editorial features some of favourite designers from the continent and were all sourced from @_akjpstudio in Cape Town. Model @ollivia.williams is beautiful and captivating in the imagery and brings pieces by @iamisigo (Nigeria), @sevaria.ke (Kenya) and @connade_ (South Africa) to life.

While catching up with editing stories, I found these photos from our @twygmag roadtrip to @karoo_winter_wool_festival in July.

Thank you @tandekilemkize @kasper_knudsen_ and @georgia.altbeker for coming along this year to write stories, capture the magic that happens in the Karoo and as always to learn about the local wool industry's value chain.

Thank you to the Karoo Winter Wool Festival for making this annual event happen. And thank you to @viviers.studio and @hovendesign for curating the amazing Karoo Kraal exhibition, bringing more than 70 pieces of woollen pieces into this space. 🩵
