Both “misinformation” and “disinformation” have become common terms in the last few years, with both being searched more on google in the past year than ever before (more than doubling their last high point in 2004). But what do these words mean? Are they interchangeable or mean different things? Check out this post to learn more!

“In honor of Giving Tuesday, one of the most charitable days of the year, Tangle will be donating 50% of all new subscription revenue and "tips" this week to Heavenly HRVST, one of my favorite charities that provides delicious shelf-stable meals to the hungry in New York City and across the east coast.

Tangle founder Isaac Saul has met and interviewed their founder, John Doherty, and even tried their meals, which are fantastic. It's a great organization that we love to support.

Here's some good news.

Source • @tangle.news Expected to easily pass the House and become the 12th federal holiday, the Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would make Juneteenth, or June 19th, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

Juneteenth commemorates when the last enslaved African Americans learned they were free. Confederate soldiers surrendered in April 1865, but word didn’t reach the last enslaved Black people until June 19, when Union soldiers brought the news of freedom to Galveston, Texas. That was also about two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves in the Southern states.

From the AP:

“Making Juneteenth a federal holiday is a major step forward to recognize the wrongs of the past,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. “But we must continue to work to ensure equal justice and fulfill the promise of the Emancipation Proclamation and our Constitution.”

The Senate passed the bill under a unanimous consent agreement that expedites the process for considering legislation. It takes just one senator’s objection to block such agreements.

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., had objected in the previous Congress to a bill to celebrate Juneteenth as a federal holiday because of the cost and lack of debate, he said. Johnson noted that he has supported resolutions recognizing the significance of Juneteenth, but he was concerned the new holiday would give federal employees another day off at a cost of about $600 million per year.

“While it still seems strange that having taxpayers provide federal employees paid time off is now required to celebrate the end of slavery, it is clear that there is no appetite in Congress to further discuss the matter. Therefore, I do not intend to object,” Johnson said in a statement before Tuesday’s vote.

The bill is sponsored by Sen. Edward Markey, D-Mass., and had 60 co-sponsors.

One of the best ways to improve your critical thinking ability is to seek out nonpartisan news sources. I think Isaac Saul at Tangle is doing it right.

We often look at current events through KEYHOLES.
.
KEYHOLES are the easiest way to provide news. It doesn’t take a lot of work for media companies to create these stories, and it take even less work for us to consume them.
.
Providing news through KEYHOLES is a very intentional strategy by those in power. It makes it VERY easy for interested parties (politicians, corporations, the media) to frame situations any way they want. Their goal is to keep you emotionally attached. Providing context & nuance weakens their ability to do so.
.
However, real life doesn’t operate through KEYHOLES. Real life is complicated and nuanced. And the stories we see on the news are NEVER fully contextualized.
.
Unfortunately, we can often be tricked into thinking these KEYHOLES provide the full story. But they never do.
.
When we open the DOOR and look at the full story, things ALWAYS look different than they first appear through that tiny little KEYHOLE.
.
ALWAYS look for more context. And NEVER be afraid to find the nuance in seemingly straightforward stories. Context, nuance, and empathy are the best ways to beat misinformation and division. Don’t let anyone force you to choose otherwise.
