Vice President JD Vance appeared skeptical that the Pentagon will actually livestream the execution of the Fort Hood shooter, but said if it does happen, that he would not watch it.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced yesterday that the Fort Hood shooter would be executed by firing squad in December, at the same time, place, and day of the week as the shooting. Shortly afterward, the Pentagon said that the execution would additionally be livestreamed. The Fort Hood shooting was done by a U.S. Army major and psychiatrist who killed 13 people and injured 32 others. He is set to be the first person executed by firing squad in the military since World War II.

“I’ve seen these announcements, I don’t know if that’s actually going to happen,” Vance said before noting that it isn’t scheduled until December. He then said that even though he believed that the Fort Hood shooting was the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil other than 9/11, he would not watch the execution. by @tangle.news

“It must be a joke,” Navi Pillay said when she was first told that she had won this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. Pillay is an international lawyer and judge, and didn’t initially answer when the Nobel Committee called her as she was attending a conference of human rights lawyers and judges. When she was told by others that she won, she didn’t believe the news.

Pillay is South African and began her career by representing anti-apartheid dissidents in court. After the end of apartheid, she became a judge on South Africa’s High Court, and eventually went into international law after being appointed as a judge on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. She’s also served as the United Nations’ human rights chief and a judge on the International Criminal Court. Last year, she led the UN commission that concluded Israel’s actions in Gaza constitute a genocide against Palestinians. Israel has objected to the commission’s report, as well as Pillay being the recipient of the prize.

President Donald Trump — who has criticized the Nobel Committee in the past and called for the Peace Prize to be awarded to him — reshared another user’s post on Truth Social that criticizes Pillay and the fact she was the award’s recipient, before appearing to suggest that Trump should have won the award.

In their press release announcing Pillay as the winner, the Nobel Committee said that “this year’s laureate has been instrumental in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted.” by @tangle.news

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced that the firing squad execution of the shooter who carried out the 2009 Fort Hood attack will be public.

The attack was carried out by a U.S. Army major and psychiatrist, leaving 13 dead and dozens more injured. Should the execution occur, it will be the first U.S. military execution in over 60 years — and the first by firing squad since World War II. It is currently scheduled for 1 pm at Fort Hood on December 3 — the same time, place, and day of the week as the shooting. It could be delayed if the shooter files a habeas corpus petition.

President Donald Trump picked firing squad as the method after a 2023 military rule change allowed the president to choose the method of any military executions. Previously, lethal injection was the designated standard method for military executions starting in 1984, though no executions occurred during that time.

President Donald Trump was speaking at a rally in San Antonio, Texas to support Republican senate nominee and current Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton when the speech was repeatedly interrupted by protestors.

Trump spoke for a total of an hour and 40 minutes, with police escorting out at least a dozen protestors — some in handcuffs — over the course of the speech. The president alleged that the individuals were being paid.

In one instance, a protestor appeared to be grabbed by a member of the audience as he was walking through the crowd. The attendee appears to grab the heckler by the shoulders and hair before it appears that other rallygoers separate the man and the protestor.

The trip marks Trump’s third visit to Texas in a month, coming as many believe the Texas senate race to be one of the most important of the cycle. Trump endorsed Paxton in the primary over incumbent Republican Senator John Cornyn. by @tangle.news

Secretary of State Marco Rubio was asked about the possible plague outbreak in Russia, which he described as not “cause for alarm” but rather a “cause for focus.”

Back up: On September 25 a Russian anti-plague researcher reportedly broke a test tube with the pneumonic plague pathogen before dying last week of pneumonia. Information about the potential outbreak has been scant and at times contradictory, however nearly 200 people who had contact with the researcher are reportedly under medical monitoring. Several countries, including the U.S., have called for Russia to be more forthcoming with details. “Many details have not been confirmed,” a spokesman for the State Department said. “We encourage Russian authorities to share accurate information quickly and openly.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio was asked about the situation today. He responded: “We know what we know… There’s very limited travel between the U.S. and Russia obviously, but like anything else if something like that gets out it could quickly spread, so we’re watching it and monitoring it closely. I don’t think it’s cause for alarm, but I think it is cause for focus and a cause to just keep an eye on it, and we’re doing that.” by @tangle.news

Zach Bryan — the country singer known for songs like “Something in the Orange” and “I Remember Everything” — wore a “Free Palestine” T-shirt last night during his performance in Gillette Stadium, which is owned by Robert Kraft. Kraft made headlines last month after he allegedly pushed Ed Sheeran to drop Macklemore as the tour’s opener after he said “Free Palestine” and accused Israel of carrying out a genocide during performances earlier in the tour.

Kraft reportedly organized owners of several other stadiums scheduled on the tour to refuse to allow Sheeran to perform if Macklemore remained as the opener. Macklemore, a longtime friend of Sheeran, wrote that “Ed was in a f–ked up position.” He continued: “[Sheeran] knew it. His typical apolitical stance was being challenged in a way it never had been before. He told me that the words ‘Free Palestine’ and the image of the Palestinian flag were hurtful to a lot of people he spoke with. I told him that if those words were more offensive than tens of thousands of Palestinian children being killed by Israel, then there was a fundamental disconnect between where those people stood and where I stood. But he couldn’t get past his public facing, ‘I don’t take sides.’”

Kraft released a statement on his decision to bar Macklemore from playing in Gillette stadium, saying that the singer crossed a line. “Much of my time and attention for the last decade has been focused on the fight against antisemitism and hate of all kinds, and I feel a responsibility to stand up when I believe that line has been crossed.”

Several other members of Bryan’s band wore shirts that appear to convey support for Palestine. The band has another concert scheduled for Kraft’s Gillette Stadium tonight. by @tangle.news

Newly released bodycam footage shows Altoona, Pennsylvania police officers arrest Luigi Mangione — who has since admitted to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson — on December 9, 2024.

The video shows Mangione initially giving police officers a fake ID listing his name as “Mark Rosario,” which was the same name Mangione allegedly used to check into a New York hostel prior to the killing of Thompson. Police quickly realized that Mark Rosario was not his actual name, and believed that he was responsible for the killing. Eventually, they ask Mangione his real name, which he gives, and the video later shows his arrest.

CNN obtained the footage, which was previously sealed under court orders, following petitions to the court.

While Mangione pleaded guilty to federal charges of interstate stalking resulting in death and cyberstalking resulting in death in August, he still faces murder and weapons charges at the state level. His defense has called for the state charges to be dismissed, arguing that they are double jeopardy violations following his federal guilty plea. by @tangle.news
