Jeff (2025)
Dir. Julia Hebner
Screened as part of my remote press coverage for Final Girls Berlin Film Festival.

A phone sex operator loses her grip on reality, caught in a hypnotic relationship with a caller making disturbing confessions.

We all know that monsters, hooded figures with knives and things that go bump in the night are terrifying staples of the horror genre. But what of those darker real-world experiences, those stories too dark to bring to light, too uncomfortable to discuss openly, that sit in the back of your mind in a locked box never to be opened? Jeff is an award-winning provocative horror short that delves into one such example of the depravity that hides in plain sight.

We follow Marcia (Nicole Elliott), a phone sex operator who takes a call from Jeff (Brian Villalobos). It's soon apparent Jeff is not interested in the services provided and rather seeks an opportunity to confess deep seeded tendencies. Instead of repulsion, Marcia placates the request, allowing Jeff a space to divulge the darkest of desires and disturbing sexual urges.

I should highlight this film delves into heavy themes, including references to paedophilia and incest. Whilst the topics are triggering, they're depicted solely through intense dialogue between our two leads. It also challenges our own perceptions, daring us to ask if we could find empathy and connection with a human who may be unforgivable.

The performances of Nicole Elliott and Brian Villalobos are impeccable. For a film with such heavy themes, they conveyed the story with conviction and immersed me into the depravity with a natural discomfort.

Jeff is a polarising yet important watch; it balances that fine line between crimes that should not be committed, and brave artistic expression. This is not a film for everyone, but I for one am glad it exists.
