THE PAST IS DEAD, PHEW IS NOW. And so are these special test pressing editions of ‘Vertigo KO’ and ‘Vertical Jamming’ that we’ve just assembled for Phew’s ICA show. Hand-stamped labels, hand numbered, DIY packing tape and photocopier covers, office printer inserts, you know the score. Available exclusively from the merch table tonight, first come first served, any left will be floating around at Le Guess Who? this weekend. Remember, governments will rise and fall, but the music of Phew is an eternal hum that will continue long after we’re all gone.

“Dub Choice” by African Stone, another Dennis Bovell flipside version excursion that features on the Sufferer Sounds compilation, finally back in stock on vinyl after the initial copies flew out in double quick time. If you’re a record shop looking to stock this then you should be able to get it from our distributors, any problems hit us up. Also re-stocked at Bandcamp for the mail order crew. Here’s another excerpt from the sleevenotes in which Dennis tells the story of this track:

“The drums are by Jah Bunny again, all the other instruments are by John Kpiaye, and I’m singing. Those guys were in the studio working on a bass line for a track called “Peaceful Woman”, they were doing a cover of that for a girl called Carolyn Catlin, who’s the younger sister of Pauline from Brown Sugar. I came in the room and went: “we need to write a new tune on that rhythm track”. The other guys didn’t think I could do it there and then, so we had a bet, but I started off with some words from a friend of mine called Rudolph Rooks, a Nigerian boy who died, he was one of the sufferers, part of the sound system crew. Always really dressed up with snakeskin shoes and all that, he was a bit of a hustler, and sadly he died in a car crash, but before he died he told me that he wanted to write a song, and he came up with these lines:

“Baby it’s a sad situation I know
when more than one man wants you so.
And it’s even worse
when you know you have to choose
and all but one of us is sure to lose.”

So, upon his death, those words kept coming back to me, and I thought “ah, you’ve got to finish the song”. So I wrote: “Baby, if you listen to that voice, you make the right choice and choose me”. Unfortunately Rudolph never heard the finished song, which is a shame, but I always sing it. There are two other versions of that song, one by Marie Pierre and the other by Paulette Tajah, produced by Mad Professor. Imagine, they’ve taken my song and now it’s become a bit of a lovers rock anthem, their versions are more famous than mine, because it’s a girl singing it! So I decided to reclaim it for this album.”

The ‘Tape Echo’ edition of Sufferer Sounds by Dennis Bovell is now sold out, but in response to popular demand, we’re going to reprint the zine as a standalone item. Available to pre-order now, shipping mid-February.

32 page 8” x 8” stapled booklet featuring extended interview with Dennis Bovell, including the crucial early history of Jah Sufferer Sound System, plus photos, label scans and flyers. There’s also more copies of the 2LP and CD en route to us, also shipping mid-February and back in the racks of all the best record shops around then also.

Thanks for all the support on this release so far, the response has been amazing, and big up the great Dennis Bovell always.

Maybe you’re waiting for your copy of Sufferer Sounds to land (re-stock in soon!), maybe you’re a record shop waiting this to land with our distributor (also imminent), maybe you’re even one of the lucky ones that already has their hands on it and is wondering where to go next with exploring the magical world of Dennis Bovell productions. Either way, the latest instalment In the Disciples mix series is for you. Originally compiled for the General Echo Reggae Disco in 2018, when Dennis made his first appearance there, revived in 2024. Features one track from Sufferer Sounds (“Come With Me” which surely should have been a worldwide hit, what an incredible tune), lots of amazing flipside ‘versions’ from the same 76 - 80 period as the compilation, plus work with greatest living dub poet LKJ and kindred spirits (split 45/shared members) the Slits and the Pop Group. Swipe left for tracklist. To listen check the link you-know-where and scroll down to mixes. What an insane catalogue, and this doesn’t even touch on Saâda Bonaire or Fela Kuti or Golden Teacher or Tabby Cat Kelly or dozens of others I would have included with an extra hour or two.

Dennis Bovell compilation is going down really well! So well in fact that I’ve had to stagger the release date a bit to make sure records are going to the right places. CD is out today, and some European shops have the vinyl. UK shops will have LPs in on 6th December, and should be in the racks of US stores on 13th December. If you pre-ordered vinyl from us and haven’t received your order yet, please be patient, these will ship as soon as we get more LPs in, should be end of the month.

A reminder that Sufferer Sounds isn’t on the usual streaming services, if you’re a digital listener then please grab a download (lossless files available) from Bandcamp, Bleep or Boomkat.

As the CD is out today, this is maybe a good time to talk about the cover, and the format variations. We were lucky enough to licence a couple of really nice shots of Dennis from the brilliant @syd.shelton.9 . I’m a massive fan of his work, check out his new ‘Stills From Life’ book covering 50 years of great photojournalism.

In the early days of CDs coming in, I remember seeing markedly different approaches to cover presentation if it was a multi-format release, with the cover image and text being presented in a totally different way across LP, CD and cassette - something like The Smiths’ ‘The World Won’t Listen’ compilation is a good example of this (yeah I don’t have any time for the singer these days either).

Anyway, I always wanted to try this on a release and we had two great Syd pics of Dennis to choose from, so we decided to go for a full length shot for the vinyl, and then a close crop of an alternate shot for the CD, with the ‘third disciple’ at Studio Tape-Echo totally nailing how to make both formats look great. Swipe left for the front cover variations and the original shots from Syd (he’s the geezer on the left so I’m guessing these were done on a timer!).

It chimes with the Luke Shaw and Bruce Russell book I read recently that make the case for records (specifically vinyl in their case) being the “total artwork of the late twentieth century”, and as someone wise told me this week “we all know a century ends partway through the next”.
