Day 24 – 30/100: I’m declaring this a multi-day day and doing a round of speed tasting of weekend leftovers from Copake

From China:

FARMentation Renaissance Project 2021: whole cluster Italian Riesling grapes immersed in Pinot Noir juice. Does anyone have deep insight into the chemistry created by this process? Because the results are magic. Floral and silky with an iced berry edge from the Pinot Noir and from the Italian Riesling: yellow and orange citrus tang with a green almond edge. Four days open and it still tastes like a sherbert colored rainbow.

Cellar Project To the Cloud 2023: Grasevina grapes (Do you know any of it’s other names? Bonus points and everlasting glory if you do!) Orange creamsicle nose. The way this wine moves across the palate is wildness. It’s lifts up, coats the top of the mouth, then floats down the back and sides, like a waterfall – giving the sensation of floating while being intensely grounded at the same moment. I think I’ve had dreams like this.

Xiaopu Roussanne 2022: “Hot dog water” was thrown around quite a bit when we first tasted this. And “rancid corn butter, but in a good way.” Also, “the really good manure”. (If you live near farmland, you know what this means.) Today, Day 4, it tastes like Roussanne, which is exactly what it is. It’s a daisy chain of I-love-it-I-love-it-not. (I do think I love it.)

Silver Heights The Last Warrior Red 2022: Bordeaux blend, heavy on the Cab Sauv. Coming in at a price and a style that will make this very fun to sell to fans of the grape grown in warm places (ripe black plums, a bit of dark chocolate) but still want a hit of proper herbal notes (hello bay leaf!) 15% abv but holds it like a champ.

From Portugal

Gardunha Sul Gatafunho: Inland from Lisbon. Shining on Day 4 – sunkissed lemons, chamomile tea and a very very very sublte note of dried mint? Texture from 10 days of skin contact and granite soil, like a rock with the slightest bit of moss on it.

Ciclo Branco 2024 from Alentejo: Lime juice tempered with pristine river water. Grapes grown on limestone = a core of linearity. Plus how beautiful is this bottle??

Another wild portfolio tasting day in NYC. Made it to four out of six potential tastings. The laws of physics made it difficult to do more. But I tried! I really really tried! It’s the life of a wine pro. Yes, it’s about loving wine. It’s also about loving logistics and the subway and PowerPoint and Excel and figuring out how to get to point A to B to C to D to E (and maybe even F) as quickly as humanly possible. And sometimes, sadly, it’s just not humanly possible.

Once from Ohio, always from Ohio. And happily, there’s good boozy things to drink. Sloppy would be proud. This is a drink worth hanging on for.

THE MOST EXCITING NEWS: this blurry picture is of our first pallets paddling their way across the ocean towards New York, landing end of this month! This has been a mission for a long time + a logistical challenge for what feels like an even longer time but we’re finally on the water! Get ready New York - Chinese wine is coming! 🍾
