Stuck in Afghanistan in an Alto 😅

Two days we spent in Afghanistan on the Mongol Rally were some of the craziest days of our life. The kindness & hospitality of Afghan people is absolutely unmatched. Even after being stuck in the worst possible way, we came out smiling with incredible visuals in our head of an adventure we will never forget.

Made it to Afghanistan 🇦🇫 in our Alto, but getting out of Afghanistan seemed impossible within 24 hours of our entry. What followed was a crazy sequence of events that could have only unfolded in Afghanistan. 2 days in Afghanistan were enough to be the highly of our 2 month epic trip.

Afghanistan Visa in Tehran, Iran.
We only had 9 days visa in Iran (effectively 7, as border crossings take most of day time), and I assumed Afghanistan is Visa on Arrival (since I was there last year), but thankfully before leaving Tehran we visited the Afghanistan Embassy to check if VOA is valid, and they apparently you can’t get the visa at the Iran-Afghanistan border.
If we had not checked; we would have been in a very bad situation, but thankfully we got the visa on time, and from here next few days we’re going to be the most badass driving days we will ever experience!

Pulao ke chakkar me Dosti toot gayi!

The rice preparation in Iran was incredible everywhere we ate. I am from Lucknow and very biased towards any rice dish outside Lucknow. But Tahchin Pulao is so good, you can travel to Iran just for this. May be the greatest preparation of rice in the world!

Getting cash in Iran. Wo bhi seeedha 34 crore!
Current exchange rates in Iran are insane. As per Google, 1$ is 1.45 million Riyal, but you can get anything between 1.7 to 1.9 million Riyal on ground.
Nobody uses cash, everyone has a local bank card. But international cards are not working and money exchange outside tourist centers is almost impossible.
It’s best to get it changed at the hotel, we found it very difficult as all exchanges refused but found some agents who swiped their cards at money exchange and gave us cash for very nominal charges!

We loved Tehran, had a very Delhi vibe, and incredibly, busy, open and very very cool young crowd. Iran is super affordable currently, and Tehran was one of the best big cities in the trip for us that included London, Budapest, Prague, Istanbul, Paris, would love to go back and spend more time!
