Tarmak22, the exhibition space at Gstaad-Saanen Airport named after the runway it overlooks, has transformed its summer programme into something of an alpine field study for How to Dance in Flower Fields. Curated by Antonia Crespí (@antonia.crespi), the exhibition brings together Chris Ofili, Wolfgang Tillmans (@wolfgang_tillmans), Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy, Franz Gertsch (@franz.gertsch), Chiara Camoni (@chiara.camoni), Álvaro Urbano (@alvaro_urbano) and Monica Ursina Jäger (@monicaursinajaeger), with the flora of the surrounding Saanenland at its core. Contemporary and historical works share space with rare botanical drawings and herbarium specimens from archives in Zurich, Geneva and Bern, with the exhibition running in Gstaad until 6 September.

Throughout the exhibition, the flowers take on different roles, with Tillmans’ photograph showing two flowering plants leaning into one another, Ernst pushing flora towards Surrealism, and dried gentians from the Swiss botanical archives featuring alongside works that consider how botanical knowledge has been preserved and transmitted over time. Even the exhibition title resists the idea of simply observing nature from a distance, with visitors asked to move between the microscopic and the landscape, and to notice how much of a flower field depends on everything around it. Admission is free, which is useful if you happen to be passing through Gstaad-Saanen Airport before the show closes.

Presented by @tarmak22 in collaboration with @hauserwirth, @davidzwirner, @nahmadcontemporary, @spazioa_pistoia, @travesiacuatro and Monica Ursina Jäger Studio (@monicaursinajaeger).

Still haven’t picked up the August issue of GstaadLife? Now is the time – our September edition will be out soon.

In GstaadLife No 5, we sit down with Rita and Cindy for a talk about culture; we take a tour of the region’s latest exhibitions in ART TALK; get behind the wheel of the new Ferrari Amalfi; and bring you plenty more from around the Saanenland.

Pick up your copy while it’s still on the shelves – or subscribe and have GstaadLife delivered directly to you or on your tablet.

Summer in Gstaad is refreshingly laid-back, with easy-paced days built around local bakeries, long hikes, and seasonal lunches. From a cozy chalet restaurant run by a husband-wife duo serving seasonal, ingredient-focused dishes to a contemporary gallery set in the most unexpected location, read about Gstaad in summer at the link in bio.
