From wildflowers found amongst the Alpine grasses to cultivated blooms and botanical illustrations preserved in the archives, flowers appear in many forms throughout How to Dance in Flower Fields.

At the heart of the exhibition is the relationship between landscape, art and botany - looking at how plants are encountered in nature, then observed, collected, documented and represented over time.

Among them, Gentiana holds particular significance, appearing both in the surrounding Alpine landscape and through botanical study within the exhibition.

Presented in collaboration with the ETH Zurich Herbarium @ethzurich and the Botanical Gardens of Geneva and Bern, How to Dance in Flower Fields brings historical botanical material into dialogue with works by contemporary and modern artists.

Final week to visit Tarmak22 at Gstaad Airport.
Open Wednesday–Saturday, with private viewings available by appointment throughout September. taken in Gstaad, Switzerland by @tarmak22

A glimpse into the botanical archives that helped shape How to Dance in Flower Fields.

Taking the flora of the Saanenland as its point of departure, the exhibition brings rare botanical drawings and herbarium specimens from the United Herbaria of the University and @ethzurich into dialogue with contemporary works by Chris Ofili, Wolfgang Tillmans, Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy, Franz Gertsch, Chiara Camoni, Álvaro Urbano and Monica Ursina Jäger.

Sitting alongside one another, these historical and contemporary works explore our enduring relationship with the natural world - and ideas of growth, transformation and the ways we observe and preserve it.

What connects everything in How to Dance in Flower Fields?

Running through the exhibition is the idea of the rhizome — an underground plant system that grows outwards, creating new roots and connections.

It becomes a way of exploring the interconnectedness of the natural world throughout the exhibition.

Discover the story at Tarmak22, Gstaad.
Until 6 September · Wednesday–Saturday, 2–6pm

First look at works by Max Ernst and Yves Tanguy featured in ‘How to Dance in Flower Fields.’

For Max Ernst, nature was a world of endless invention. His imagined flowers, made at the peak of Surrealism, bloom from the unconscious –becoming impossible organisms between scientific specimen and dream.

Yves Tanguy’s mysterious, dreamlike landscapes are filled with otherworldly spaces, making him one of the most recognised figures of Surrealism.

Countdown to ‘How to Dance in Flower Fields,’ opening 6 August. The exhibition invites us to imagine alternative ways of relating to the living world 🌱

In collaboration with @spazioa_pistoia, the exhibition features Chiara Camoni (@chiara.camoni) whose ceramic sculptures become flowers or insects, shifting and wandering before dissolving back into everyday life.

Monica Ursina Jäger’s (@monicaursinajaeger) immersive two-channel installation “Transient Traveller” examines the histories embedded in natural materials, where scientific knowledge meets oral tradition, myth and legend.

On view until 6 September 2026.

Opening next week: How to Dance in Flower Fields 📆

For the first time, Tarmak22 brings together rare botanical drawings and herbarium specimens alongside contemporary works by international artists, including:

Wolfgang Tillmans (@wolfgang_tillmans), whose work reflects his ongoing exploration of the poetic possibilities of photography, revealing the fragile ecosystems deeply intertwined with humanity and everyday life.

Chris Ofili, whose allegorical landscapes evoke worlds where flowering stems emerge from the music of masked pipers, becoming portals between the earthly and the celestial.

COMING SOON…
Summer Exhibition at @tarmak22

Moving with the flowers in unexpected ways, ‘How to Dance in Flower Fields’ begins in the Alpine landscape, before opening onto broader stories of the natural world. Looking at the dried plants of the herbaria and botanical illustrations, the exhibition pairs scientific representations of flowers with a selection of contemporary works that reimagine and expand botanical forms.
