3 WHERE WE’VE BEEN: SEEKING INSPIRATION

From Lunerie to Rebel Yum and back again, curiosity drives how I think about food and create with the team.

We’ve drawn from the coastal smells of Malindi and the fragrance of passion fruit and frangipani igniting the flavour of freshly brewed Rwandan coffee. Working to explore Nikkei and Peruvian heritage, and being invited by @food.indaba in 2025 to offer an event on the migration of ingredients in African cuisines.

We got to cater for the kings of Jozi - no seriously, the @jozi_kings_and_things - a couple of celebs, and did crafty for the Orlando Pirates 🥹 and through it all I’ve hung onto the rainbow @pylones_ apron gifted by a dear friend at the start of my foodie journey, as unusual as it may seem to the serious among us.

I spent days learning how to break down an animal, and almost lost two fingers to a vicious cleaver! And somehow we landed back in Cape Town with all ten fingers and toes, and a backpack full of yum for you 💖

Join us for an immersive dining experience that explores how global history has shaped the food we call African today. The Glocal Table invites guests to reflect on the Columbian Exchange and its lasting impact on African cuisines, featuring ingredients like tomatoes, maize, and chillies, which were not originally native to the continent but have become deeply woven into our culinary identity.

This curated evening is led by Tarryn de Kock, academic researcher, published author, MasterChef South Africa Season 4 finalist, and founder of Rebel Yum. Through storytelling and carefully crafted dishes that reflect the culinary traditions of six African countries, she brings together rigorous research and culinary artistry in a way that challenges our understanding of authenticity, cultural resilience, and food heritage.

Recently, we previewed the experience during a behind-the-scenes tasting where Chef Tarryn shared both the food and the stories that inspired it. The result is a sensory journey through history, memory, and identity.

This post starts with a story, and a thank you :) I was unable to attend the fabulous launch of @cariema.isaacs newest cookbook title, Modern Cape Malay Cooking, in Langebaan - so between @happididi and the amazing Cariema herself, a plan was made for me to get my own signed copy delivered in Cape Town!

So if I wasn’t already biased, sue me, but I love Cariema’s work and her contribution to preserving and playing with our favourite heritage recipes. This one is a companion to the original Cape Malay Kitchen, and it’s filled with all kinds of delicious new favourites (can you say Instant Pot breyani? Because my tastebuds can).

Last night I tried Cariema’s chicken curry recipe. It’s the perfect weather for it, and the sauce is so good that the leftovers will end up on toast 😍 there’s an entire chapter dedicated to using those modern kitchen essentials, the airfryer and the Instant Pot, but my favourite sections are definitely the one focused on the humble smoor, and on delicious mocktails and drink ideas. I also finally found a mini steak pie recipe I can trust 🥲 this is a title worth having, loves - and all the fangirling is 100% deserved!

The people.

Watching @kobusvdmerwe and his team prep for lunch is fascinating – the attention to detail is intricate and precise. Here, a fresh catch of Cape Bream is carefully filleted by Kobus and pin-boned by @tarryngdk – Masterchef finalist and private chef – before being prepared into an elegant ceviche with foraged soutslaai.

Kobus’ kitchen spills out into the restaurant, and so much of what goes on is visible to diners. However, when the sun is shining and the ocean is blue, the best seats in the house are on the stoep – leaving indoors exclusively for the team – and two very lucky photographers.

In the spirit of ThrowBack Thursday I wanted to share this gem ✨️
Exactly one year ago today we were in CPT completing our in-person auditions to be on the show ! The 30minute challenge was eggs, some had to make an omlete, some had to make poached eggs. I remember it like it was yesterday 😜 We then had to wait until the next day to find out if we had made it or not, and this crazy journey began. 😂
