My brother is probably torn between being disappointed that I made a steak of cauliflower, and being stoked that I won a hunk of cash (or as he’d say, ā€˜WE won a hunk of cash’ - kids these days…)

As I said last night, you’re going to be amiss if you’re aiming for meat and two veg with vegan cooking. It’s a mindset that requires thinking of fruit and vegetables as standalone products of their own, that can be manipulated, played with, and amplified into interesting new flavours and sensations. I went for a roasted cauliflower steak that picked up those savoury, sweet flavours of date and marmite, and played well with the pickled salad that I used to dress the final dish. I’m so proud of this dish particularly. I think mystery boxes are my favourite kind of challenge because they force you to focus on what’s at hand, much like that daily visit to the fridge where you have to figure out what’s for dinner. As much as the @masterchef_sa pantry is out of this world, it’s also exciting to have your shopping done for you!

It was difficult to see @charmskitchenza and @tembisa_cooks leave yesterday because they have been phenomenal competitors from the start. You get to know and love people spending so much time around them. I adore my MCSA family. When I went through our pictures from last night I stumbled on pic 3, which is the picture taken the day we all received our aprons. It seems like a lifetime ago. And yet there’s still a lifetime of new memories to be made, plates to be shared, and dreams to pursue with these incredible people at my side. Here’s to the journey - I can never capture how grateful I am to have found myself among such absolute stars. I know Charms and Tembs have glorious things waiting for them.

Don’t forget tonight at 6pm. You don’t want to miss it - this challenge is notorious among the top 4 for a reason šŸ™ˆ

Winter is coming, sweet summer children of the south, so it’s time for preserving some of the season’s joys.

Got this beautiful box of fresh produce and a sourdough loaf through @thosewhoharvest on their weekly CPT delivery run, including some beautiful limes and apples, a brinjal with a boobie, fresh herbs and daikon! Can’t wait to share the results, but definitely a 12/10 on trying a new service for the first time 🌷✨🐾 there are several box options and add-ons, so give them a follow!

Part 3: why privatisation will fail, and what it will do to our public services.

The DA Speaker in the WC has consistently been named in flouting processes that require input from all city Council members. Forcing through decisions, scheduling meetings at inopportune times, and muting critics using online features - is this a trend we want to further with AI?

Why does the Mayor believe withholding salary increases is an appropriate way to compel city staff to use AI systems, and what benefit does it offer him or his party? Do we remember what happened with the draft AI policy earlier this year? Do we need a network analysis of all the successful tech tenders in the WC and who their beneficiaries are connected to?

The failed municipal tax based on property value? Came from a failed Thatcher era ā€˜community tax’. They don’t have a single original idea to rub together besides the fundamental principle that is this:
THE STATE IS THE LAST FRONTIER OF UNTAPPED CAPITAL THAT NEEDS TO BE ā€˜UNLOCKED’ TO DRIVE FLAILING MARKETS.
BUSINESS OWES NO DUTY TO THE STATE.
BUT THE STATE SHOULD SUPPORT BUSINESS BEFORE IT TAKES US ALL DOWN.

That logic is what caused the devastation of the post-2008 crash. It has never led to widespread prosperity or resolution of social challenges, and in countries far less unequal than this one.

Debbie Schafer left the WCED knowing the report we produced had terms attached. She didn’t care. I couldn’t complete my PhD because we did too good a job demonstrating flaws in their proposed ideas. Now you know why I profoundly resent this party and all it stands for. They are a stain on the concept of public service, duty and civic responsibility, and they do not belong in or deserve to represent a democratic and multiracial republic. by @tarryngdk

Pt 2: Understanding why privatisation will fail

South Africa had a flourishing welfare state for apartheid beneficiaries that was dismantled for a more market oriented approach promoted by the structural adjustment crew of the 90s.
Our country’s inequality persists because of a generational system of allocating wealth, land, opportunity and access based on race. Apartheid’s engineers were psychologists, sociologists, lawyers and economists who carefully structured the system to ensure the gap between black and white would become naturalised as fact through social policy.

Part 3 coming later today - but here’s where we need to start paying attention. The DA will tell you social welfare and equity are a drain on development, so why not ask them
- why they don’t use public schools and hospitals
- why they return millions meant for social housing
- where all the money from illegal municipal charges went
- how are we meant to believe in the contents of a clean audit when they raided the DA offices earlier this year and when John himself described their policies as shaped by racism and anti-democratic policy?
- why do they fixate on audit results and financial indicators and not simply observe the sheer decline in quality of life for many Capetonians since COVID? by @tarryngdk

Part 1: understanding the history of where the DA and other parties’ investment in privatisation comes from, and the real effect it had on destroying the gains of the UK welfare state that they base their policies on.

Part 2 coming later today with a focus on what this means for South Africa. Will include references you can look up šŸ’–
Thanks to those of you who asked for a concrete version of this - keen to hear thoughts but as always keep it kind, respectful and constructive. by @tarryngdk

Nothing said here negates the scale of damage and violence being done to people who have come to this country for opportunities they don’t have and safety they may need.

Many South Africans are Afrophobic for the same reason many still have internalised racism. This country was built on the principle of weaponising and even fabricating differences to keep people apart and prevent them from finding common ground across divisions.

To live in this country is to constantly confront the incompleteness of our liberation. You cannot speak on it if you aren’t intimately familiar with its realities - because we are living proof that the violence required to make racist, gender essentialist, and ethnonationalist difference stick is intimate. It requires friend to sell out friend, brother to blame brother.

Remember I said I’d share what I did with the @thosewhoharvest box? Huge thanks to those of you who’ve been keeping me busy with cake orders because this post is so overdue!

From that beautiful bounty I made slow roasted tomatoes in olive oil, baba ghanoush and a lovely chimichurri using the parsley, lime and oregano. I preserved the limes in salt (same as some lemons I had left over), and then pickled the Japanese white beans with mint, the sweet peppers with garlic, and did a sweeter pickle with carrot for the daikon. I forgot to add the kale chips which is wild bec they’re my favourite 🤣

These are great preserves to have on hand for sandwiches, wraps and snacks, and once preserved they keep for ages in the fridge! I’ll share examples of how I use them in simple dishes later this week šŸ’–

Went for a walk to the lovely new @jouds_cafe_cpt in Salt River, and it was so worth it. Located in Salt Orchard, Joud’s is a coffee shop offering light meals, traditional Palestinian baked goods, and incredible single origin coffee. They offer a morning coffee special and the nicest maamoul cookies I’ve ever had 🩷

Of all the many photos I have of you this will always be my favourite - because of your big, warm presence capable of holding two of your favourite girls at once.

I didn’t belong to you but you never cared. You were my favourite person - the one whose knee I would sit at so I could listen to your gentle voice sharing stories of your childhood; my coffee date and walk date and book date partner, the guy who gave me Nat Geo and Molly Moon and petit Mouche, the little fly swatted by everyone until she found home with some ragtag puppets in Paris. You encouraged me to find myself, wherever it took me, and you relished every story and clumsy mishap along the way.

You were my hero. My pioneering OG. The one who laughed at my hangovers, and always had a handkerchief, and showed quiet unspoken dignity in the way you drove through the night at 2am, over 76 years old already, just to hold the hand of your first wife and bid her a loving farewell in a cold hospital room in July. The way you carried your second wife through terminal illness and never once faltered in your love and adoration. The first picture in my MasterChef box. The first person I’d reach for every journey home. The first man who made the world safe again.

They’ll never make another like you, Gramps. Thank you for choosing me to be yours šŸ

(I am reeling but I will reply to people and thank you sm for the love ā™„ļø Trying to balance sads with first week back at work because adulting is merciless dark lol) by @tarryngdk
