East Coast Writers ✏️

So pleased to gather alumni, authors-in-residence, and agents from @norcalwritersretreat for our first-ever meetup in NYC!

First two photos mine—of NCWR director @hlazare and my dear @chloekbenjamin , who happened to be on our coast promoting her forthcoming blockbuster novel Under Story 💫 The rest are professional candids by @sylviethecamera , a former publishing professional who specializes in author portraits 📸

What professional candids taught me: just how wildly I gesticulate, as evidenced by this apparent high-five to @zakiyadalilaharris ?? ✋ Also captured: sober writer here, slinging wine bottles 🍷😂 and—I like this last one—laughing at Bill ☺️

The Northern California Writers’ Retreat is a juried workshop hosting 18 writers per session in idyllic Carmel Valley, CA. I had never been to a BookCon! 📚

I wanted to see what it was like. What I found: a pure, unadulterated reader fandom so energized to connect with favorite authors and, for a couple of days, live inside the stories.

You gotta love a place where, you’re walking down the hall, and the person next to you is just randomly wearing elf ears. There was less full-on costumery than I expected. More corporate sponsorship— @lacroixwater pop-up?! 🏖️ Somehow I missed both @jessicaknollauthor & @rufithorpe but @tash_mile and I caught @kuangrf on the main stage 💫

After a several year hiatus @bookcon is back!

TUESDAY 🗞️ DUMP
• Yesterday, in the span of 55 minutes, Reps. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) and Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) both announced their resignations from the House.
Swalwell and Gonzales each faced potential expulsion votes this week. Members and aides warned that the two lawmakers could be removed from office even though the House Ethics Committee was still conducting investigations into their cases.

• Trump posted an AI-generated image of himself as a Christ-like figure — healing a bedridden man, flanked by bald eagles and the American flag.

The image drew rare condemnation from MAGA loyalists, including allegations of blasphemy and even demonic possession. Trump deleted the post yesterday morning, telling reporters: “It’s supposed to be me as a doctor, making people better. And I do make people better.”

• Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) said he would push to hold former Attorney General Pam Bondi in contempt if she does not appear for a deposition today on the Epstein files. The Department of Justice previously said Bondi wouldn’t comply with the subpoena.

• Olivia Troye, who served as a top aide to former Vice President Pence and is a prominent critic of President Trump, announced on Tuesday that she’s launching a bid for the newly redrawn 7th Congressional District in Virginia.

• Reminder: The midterms are less than seven months away
