The fabric wasn’t a nod to what’s trending in wedding styling right now, it was the answer to a very specific problem. Take it away and you’re left with a staircase and exposed black beams, the backdrop of this venue. Hard architecture, a couple drawn to romance over industrial edges, and vows that deserved to land somewhere softened and beautiful. This is the part people miss when they only see the finished photos. The volume of fabric, the height of the drape, the placement and spacing of every floral moment, none of that was decorative. It was decided against the architecture we needed to soften, the way the florals would frame the couple, and the story we wanted their ceremony to tell. Beautiful is the outcome. A seated dinner tells guests exactly where to be all night. A cocktail reception doesn’t, which is exactly why it takes more thought, not less. Guests move through the space all night instead of anchoring to one seat, so the room needs to feel intentional from every angle, not just one. Where the venue allows it, we aim for 60 to 70 percent varied seating, and the placement is what makes or breaks the night. High bar tables sit closer to the dancefloor, built for guests who want to stay near the music and the movement. Relaxed lounge seating and dining height tables sit further back, giving your older guests somewhere to land, away from the noise, still part of the celebration. When N + L first came to us their vision was beautifully clear. Classic black and white. Timeless and elegant. There was one detail that made this brief particularly special though. We had previously styled the groom’s sister’s wedding in a very similar palette. And to be trusted by siblings is one of the greatest compliments we can receive as stylists. It also meant we felt a quiet responsibility to make sure Natasha and Lucas had a day that was entirely their own. We kept black and white as the foundation but introduced warmer mocha and nude tones throughout to give the design its own personality. That subtle shift made all the difference, honouring the palette they loved while creating something that felt distinctly theirs. It’s been a little while since we’ve styled a cocktail reception and this one reminded us exactly why we love them. The brief was timeless yet modern. Black, white and mocha tones against a raw industrial backdrop. The kind of venue that has incredible bones but needs considered styling to feel truly elevated. That’s where intentional styling takes over. We layered velvet, satin and ruffled edge linens to introduce softness and richness against the hard edges of the space. Florals in white with touches of green added life without disrupting the palette. Lush enough to feel abundant, refined enough to stay editorial. Every texture was chosen intentionally to contrast the venue while still feeling like it belonged. Cocktail receptions are sometimes seen as the more relaxed format and they are, in the best way. But the design process? Just as considered. Just as layered. Just as detail-driven as any sit-down reception we style.
