Every year in California, there’s a large-scale event that showcases Japanese culture and cuisine. It’s called “Taste of Japan” (this year it was “Sip of Japan”). LA’s authentic mikoshi group, Rafu Mutsumikai, was founded in 1994. They’ve joined Nisei Week since the beginning and performed beyond California. Their procession feels like Japan! When they called, “Anyone want to carry it?” I was tempted—but if I carry it, I can’t film! Next time, I’m joining! With a name like “Sip of Japan,” there was a lively sake and beer room. CHOYA, Asahi, Hakutsuru, MoonBloom, Ishi Shizuku, Suntory ALL-FREE, and sake from the Bishamon restaurant group were available. Sake keeps growing in popularity. I hope more people enjoy it! Yurisa was on the event’s video team. In Japan, she was the one being filmed at ageHa, but after working as a dancer and influencer, she now says, “I like being behind the scenes!” Thanks for dancing to Pink Lady after the mikoshi! Come for dinner again! The event ended with Rafu Mutsumikai’s sanbon-jime. As guests headed home, staff began cleanup. Great work, everyone! Sakiko san and Ayako san, thank you so much for the opportunity to work with you! For dinner, I bought Sushi Boy President Omachi’s nakaochi-don. So delicious—my exhaustion disappeared!

We enjoyed colorful regional dances led by local prefectural associations and other groups: Awa Odori from Tokushima (Southern California Tokushima Kenjinkai), Hanagasa Ondo from Yamagata (Southern California Yamagata Kenjinkai), Kasa Odori from Tottori (Southern California Tottori Kenjinkai), and Yosakoi Soran. For some of the dances, the audience first learned the basic steps and then joined in, bringing everyone together and making the atmosphere even more exciting! . I was once drawn to the adorable flower-and-bell-decorated hats used in Hanagasa Ondo, as well as the beautiful Kasa Odori umbrellas decorated with colorful fabric and bells, so I actually practiced and performed both dances! It made me realize that if I had continued living in Yokohama, I probably would never have had the opportunity to experience either one. Los Angeles is home to people from all 47 prefectures of Japan. I hope there will be even more opportunities for people here to experience the unique cultures, traditions, dances, and foods of Japan’s many different regions! In that sense, Taste of Japan is doing something truly wonderful by creating opportunities like this. Born in Kobe, she graduated from Konan University and worked in product planning and branding before becoming an independent sumi-e artist. She blends traditional ink painting with a modern sensibility, with live painting at Tokyo Tower and the Eiffel Tower. Her movements were so artistic and unpredictable that you couldn’t look away—changing speed and rhythm almost like a dance. I had helped cover two large canvas panels with white paper, so it was exciting to watch an image emerge with every movement she made. Then I realized—it was Mt. Fuji and a dragon! Yoshimi’s powerful energy filled the huge canvas as she painted not only with brushes but also with her hands. I filmed from close by on the left, not knowing how long it would take, and was thrilled for all 19 minutes! For the finale, Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko joined her, and she finished just as their performance ended. What a show! Afterward, Dance School Wing, Mo PomPom and Newbie brought energetic dances by little kids, teens and moms, drawing cheers from the crowd!

But all the outdoor food vendors were energetic and going strong! A little after 3 PM, I finally thought, “I can’t keep going without eating something!” and ordered freshly fried chicken from President Yusuke’s Tenkatori. Thank you so much for the treat! I ate it standing up while still taking photos, but that piping-hot, juicy karaage was exactly what I needed. It filled me up and gave me the energy to keep going until the end of the event! The food vendors included Tenkatori, Honda-ya, Kashiwa Ramen, Bread, Espresso &, Amami-Ya Baby Castella, Tokyo Street Food Lab, Umacha, Kondo Sando, Yakisoba Kintaro, Okonomiyaki Kintaro, Takoyaki Takochan, Osaka Curry, Matcha, and I Love Onigiri. Everything looked so tempting! One of the best parts of walking around a festival is being surrounded by delicious smells everywhere you go! For the kids, there were also booths with water yo-yos, super-ball scooping, and Japanese festival masks. It’s wonderful that families can experience the fun and atmosphere of a Japanese festival “matsuri culture” without even traveling to Japan!

With another helper there, I could also photograph the booths and stage. An adorable brother and sister painted their daruma. Another guest enjoyed coloring her ema, while her little dog waited patiently in a stroller. Watching them enjoy Japanese culture made me so happy! Across from us, Jazoo's Japan offered Imai Daruma from Gunma, kimono items, accessories, dog costumes and fresh bouquets. Teiko was also busy with her popular mizuhiki workshop. Other vendors included fabric goods by Pincusion Junko, leather goods by made by HIROKO, craft-band pieces by Ulana, and Hagihara Tatami. Kids and adults enjoyed origami, while Calmommy's Cardboard City Project encouraged everyone to create with their hands—a creative alternative to screen time. Arch Youth Sports Foundation displayed artwork by children with special needs, plus a silent auction and a Hokusai-themed art area.

It’s a new concept from Taste of Japan, which has been held for seven years at an Anaheim shopping mall. The 11 AM opening brought together new Torrance Mayor Sharon Kalani, Councilmembers Kartsonis and Sheikh, Consul Kitagawa from the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles, and JETRO’s new Chief Executive Director Asai for speeches, kagami-biraki, and a City of Torrance recognition. I’m so happy to see Torrance continuing to welcome and support Japanese and Japanese American culture! What a wonderful place for this new event! I was also surprised that both councilmembers had attended OCO Natsu Matsuri at Tanaka Farms in Irvine, about 70 km away, just the day before. Entertainment continued all day, with Bridge USA’s Mr. Ishii and first-time MC Yasuka hosting, while Sam and Sachiko from TJS Radio handled sound. Food vendors surrounded the stage, and JEFLA high school volunteers in yukata welcomed guests and handed out sponsor giveaways!
