Playing catch up on long overdue posts, not been well - apologies for a long silence.

Few photos with my elder kid Suda & my grandkids visiting a few shows and supporting the Tate Workers Strike at Tate Modern.

The Roundtable Discussion BEYOND THE FRAME convened by Paul Lincoln at the Festival of Print (FoP) at the Art Pavilion London discussing my interactive ArtistBook installation Subliminal Spaces XV & other speakers. Thanks Carolyn Gowdy for photos taken of me.

SS XV (installation) & the box set print: Subliminal – Think Outside The Box, explores the overlap of boundaries, the cusps of uncertainty, the thresholds of life, and the ownership of property & land, causes for many wars, including my native country Sri Lanka.

An assemblage of papercasts of furniture, vitreous enameling, plaster prints, stitch, fired glass, keys & a keffiyeh scarf (Palestinian symbols). The central mirror captures others’ work.

We. Call. Bullshit.

Artists and art workers are carrying the cost of mismanagement while institutions protect directors, donors, and models of culture that serve private interests.

Tate’s leadership chooses this model. It does not have to be this way.

“Every branch of Tate could and should be a peoples’ palace - a space of public luxury. Right now, the power in the arts is in the wrong hands. But more and more artworkers and artists are starting to realise the importance and the necessity of building our own power.”

Tate Workers On Strike 🖼️🎨

Some highlights from a couple of mornings spent on the picket line with Tate workers striking over pay & conditions at both the Tate Modern & Tate Britain.

A bit of a new style for me, tried to focus more on showing varied emotions across the pickets & highlighting the connections that are fostered between striking workers, really pleased with how these photos turned out!

Don't take the people behind the scenes for granted

Asi 150 členov a členiek odborov PCS (Public and Commercial Services Union), pracujúcich pre sieť Tate galérií vo Veľkej Británií, vstúpilo na prelome novembra a decembra 2025 do týždenného štrajku. Štrajkujúci odborári a odborárky upozornili, že až 70% ich členov a členiek nedokáže z platu od Tate inštitúcií pokryť ani základné životné náklady (nájom, strava, zdravotná starostlivosť) a ocitajú sa tak v pozícii pracujúcej chudoby (“in-work poverty”).

„Nemôžem si dovoliť základné veci a musím šetriť na jedle, spoločenských aktivitách a zdravotnej starostlivosti. Trpím úzkosťami, pretože od minulého roka žijem v mínuse.“, povedal jeden z členov PCS.

Štrajkujúci takisto problematizovali obmedzenie, či stratu niektorých zamestnaneckých výhod a zhoršenie podmienok dôchodkového poistenia. Poukázali tiež na priepastné rozdiely medzi platmi vedenia inštitúcií a rádovým zamestnanectvom. Návrh vedenia valorizovať platy o 2-3%, čo nepokrýva ani mieru inflácie, označili za “urážajúci”.

Štrajk mal podobu protestných zhromaždení a ochromenia prevádzky inštitúcií v kritickom období pred otvorením nových výstav.
Štrajkujúcim vyjadrujeme podporu a solidaritu! A pripomíname, že ani v stave vyhrotenej politickej krízy a nedostatku práce v umení a kultúre by sme nemali akceptovať nedôstojné pracovné podmienky! Práve v čase krízy je totiž zúfalá situácia pracujúcich zneužívaná na to, aby sa nastavili štandardy, ktoré sa následne len ťažko menia. Len spolu sme silnejší a dokážeme sa postaviť na odpor. Nedajme sa.

The seven-day strike at the Tate ended yesterday. The staff are back in the building, but let’s be clear: the problem hasn't been fixed. Tate management sat tight, the 3% pay offer is still on the table, and the cost of living hasn't gone down.

To everyone who attended the Turner and Constable exhibition and the opening last week: you crossed a picket line. You walked past the people who hang the art and guard the doors while they were standing in the cold fighting for a living wage. That is a choice you made.

This isn't a resolution; it’s a stalemate. The union is already looking at further action in 2026. The galleries might be open, but the dispute is very much alive.
