Over 200 members are taking seven days of strike action across all Tate Gallery sites to protest the employers refusal to give hardworking employees an inflation proof pay award for a second consecutive year. Since 2020, workers have repeatedly seen attacks to their pay terms and conditions:

1. In 2020, Tate announced plans to cut 120 gallery jobs in a £4.8 million cost cutting exercise only months after making 295 refines across its commercial enterprises

2. In 2021, Tate withdrew access to the Civil Service Pension Scheme for new starters, replacing it with a plan offer significantly weaker terms

3. In 2024, staff were offered a below inflation pay rise while Tate’s highest paid directors received total remuneration packages ranging from £195,000 to £320,000 – including one bonus that exceeded £28,000 which is more than some of our members earn annually!

4. In 2025, Tate underwent another restructure which resulted in redundancies, the closure of staff canteens, and the scrapping of subsidised lunches for workers.

In a survey conducted by PCS earlier this year, 70% of our members reported their current salary is not sufficient to meet their basic living costs including groceries, bills and transportation costs. One member recounted, “It’s hard to be motivated and be happy doing a job that doesn’t cover your costs and I am struggling to see a future in the arts where I feel secure.”

Please support Tate workers by attending our picket lines across Tate Britain, Tate Modern and Tate Liverpool between Wednesday 26th November and Tuesday 2nd December. If you an artist, writer, politicians please lend your support to our workers by speaking at our rallies, attending pickets, issuing public statements of solidarity, refusing to visit the gallery for the duration of the strikes, and writing to Maria Balshaw to express support for workers! by @tate_united

Maria Balshaw announced she will be stepping down as Director of Tate in Spring 2026. While some in the art world have described Balshaw as a “trailblazer”, her tenure proved immensely difficult for gallery workers who were subject to
repeated restructures in 2020*, 2021, and 2025 - resulting in job losses, as well as cuts to terms and conditions.

We. Call. Bullshit.

Artists and art workers are carrying the cost of mismanagement while institutions protect directors, donors, and models of culture that serve private interests.

Tate’s leadership chooses this model. It does not have to be this way.

“Every branch of Tate could and should be a peoples’ palace - a space of public luxury. Right now, the power in the arts is in the wrong hands. But more and more artworkers and artists are starting to realise the importance and the necessity of building our own power.”

Now is the time to stand with us. Join Artists’ Union England.

Last week, at our eighth (!!) Strike A Pose, we raised £1,824.30 for the workers on strike at the Tate. Solidarity! ✊❤️

Tate Workers On Strike 🖼️🎨

Some highlights from a couple of mornings spent on the picket line with Tate workers striking over pay & conditions at both the Tate Modern & Tate Britain.

A bit of a new style for me, tried to focus more on showing varied emotions across the pickets & highlighting the connections that are fostered between striking workers, really pleased with how these photos turned out!
