Shamshad Khan is an innovative studio potter and the founder of Tawaf Studio, the first of its kind in the Kashmir Valley. She began her journey by experimenting with local terracotta, drawn to its earthy tones and deep connection to the land. Over time, her work evolved as she began blending this terracotta with stoneware, creating unique, high-fired ceramics that combine the rustic warmth of terracotta with the durability and refinement of stoneware.

Tawaf Studio focuses exclusively on handcrafted tableware, blending traditional techniques with contemporary aesthetics. Shamshad is a pioneer in the region, being the first to introduce food-safe materials and lead-free glazing in pottery, setting a new standard for safe and sustainable ceramic art in Kashmir. Her dedication to local resources is evident in her exclusive use of Kashmiri clay, which serves as the foundation for her innovative creations.

Using reduction firing techniques, Shamshad achieves organic, one-of-a-kind designs inspired by the natural beauty of the earth. She experiments extensively with her own glazes, and her recent explorations involve working with wood ash glazes, including apple wood ash, to create unique, textured finishes that highlight the depth and richness of her materials.

Through Tawaf Studio, Shamshad Khan has redefined ceramic arts in Kashmir, bringing a fresh perspective to the craft while honouring its deep-rooted connection to the land. Her tableware serves both functional and artistic purposes, with each piece telling the story of the earth and its minerals, embodying the essence of the regions natural beauty.
