Just wrapped up my second gas firing at Tawaf Studio! This batch features a mix of pasta plates, Thal baans (Kashmiri bowls) and chawan bowls, all with deep terracotta tones that bring a truly earthy feel to each piece. The high-fired stoneware looks beautifully grounded, capturing that raw, rooted aesthetic I’m after. 🐟✨ From a lump of clay to a fish plate. ✨🐟

Sharing my making process here for the first time! 🙈🤎

These fish plates begin as a very ordinary piece of clay — and then slowly, through hand-building, shaping, carving, drying, firing and glazing, they find their own personality. 👐🏼🪨🔥🎨

There’s something I really love about this part of making… you start with an idea, but the clay always has a little say in the final result. 🤍

And then comes the moment I love most — opening the kiln. 🔥👀
The colours, textures and little surprises that appear after firing are never quite predictable… and that’s what makes each piece one of a kind. ✨

Here’s a little glimpse into how these fish plates came to life. 🐟🌿💚

The darkness of deep water.

A deep, dark green inspired by the quiet world beneath the surface.. where the light slowly disappears and the water holds its own kind of mystery.

The fish carries the marks of a life lived there for a very long time… weathered, rugged and beautifully imperfect.

Trout plates, made for trout. 🐟

I’ve always loved the colours of trout farms in Kashmir … the deep greens, blue water, the movement beneath the surface and the way light catches everything.

I wanted these plates to hold a little of that feeling. A trout swimming through the water, and a plate waiting to hold the real thing.

Handmade, one by one, in my studio in Kashmir. 🤍

Some of these plates are inspired by the quiet life of the forest 🌳 the animals that move through it, the deep greens, the moss, the shadows, and the feeling of being surrounded by trees.

And then there are the trout plates, inspired by the glistening water of trout farms… and the shifting greens beneath the surface, the reflections, and the beautiful little world in which the trout move.

I wanted these pieces to hold a little of that feeling: the deep, changing greens of the forest and the shimmer of water, brought together in something made slowly by hand.

There’s something about a soft milky glaze that never tries too hard. Tiny speckles catch the light, while bold hand-painted brushstrokes bring movement and character. No two mugs are ever the same, and that’s exactly the point. Imperfect, tactile, and meant to be held every single day. Small bowls for slow moments.

Designed for one.. perfect for a scoop of ice cream, fresh berries, olives, or a little dessert at the end of a meal.

Their gentle four-petal form is a quiet nod to the Louis Vuitton Monogram flower. Interestingly, many have also noticed a striking resemblance between this motif and carvings found in the 12th-century Chennakeshava Temple in Belur, Karnataka a reminder that floral forms have travelled through cultures and centuries, often carrying stories far older than we imagine. While the connection remains a subject of debate, it speaks to the timelessness of these shared visual languages.
