The environment in this book feels just as much like a living, breathing character as anyone in the story. The prose is gritty and cinematic. It’s like a cross between Charles Portis and Cormac McCarthy. Not only is it a brilliant, immersive, high stakes cat-and-mouse game, it’s a story about vengeance, survival, and redemption. Easily in my top 10 for 2026. Scroll for my favorite passage from the book.

The themes behind the genre + 50 books to check out for your TBR 🐊🖤 This time of year feels perfect for me to be reading Southern Gothic… we still have the heat of late summer, but instead of blooming, nature is dying back and slowly decaying. I haven’t read all 50 of these, and I don’t intend to - Southern Gothic is a wide reaching genre, and some just aren’t for me, but I know they’re widely enjoyed or respected. As always, if I’ve missed any you think people need to know about, please let us all know below, or if there were any you really loved / didn’t like, please tell us your thoughts 🧐💭 🖤 I’m a longtime fan of this genre from afar; my favourites so far are: The Witching Hour (and sequels) and Interview With The Vampire - by @annericeauthor The Bayou - by Arden Powell A Density of Souls - by @christopher.rice.writer - Anne Rice’s son is a great author in his own right, and has been giving us LGBTQ protagonists for decades now Ring Shout - captures some of those Sinners vibes but with more of a fairytale feel Spite House - by @comptonwrites For a cosier feel but still touching on dark themes including the civil war, racism, small town secrets - the @realcharlaine Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire mysteries are a longtime favourite (and the True Blood series) I’ve read others here that I don’t count as favourites, but have still included the ones I found well written and may be more suited to others. 💚 TBR - The ones I’m most excited to read next are: Those Across The River - by @buehlmeister The Devil Take The Blues - by @arielslickwrites Sarafina - by @pfracassi Mayra - by @nicky.gee House of Alligator Bones - by @sohuneycutt #SouthernGothic #Southerngothicbooks #HorrorBooks #Horrorbookstagram #horrorbookstagrammer

Normally if I do a book review, I throw it in my stories and call it a day. This book deserves so much more than that. Rednecks dramatizes the West Virginia and Kentucky mining battles and the unrest that led to The Battle of Blair Mountain (the largest armed labor uprising in US history). I finished this book in two days, sobbing both on an airplane and in the airport. If you are into union history, fights against corporate greed and workers exploitation, Appalachian culture, coal mining strikes, the beauty of community, or the drive that anger is, this book should be next on your list to read. I haven’t been moved by a book like this in a very long time, and its relevance to today is profound. “They wear red bandannas around their necks, as if their throats have already been cut. People will call them primitives and hillbillies, anarchists and insurrectionists. They will call them Rednecks.”
