We cross the long bridge into Apalachicola at dusk. The high, dark fortress of a thunderhead pulses over the bay. The lights of the Gulf Coast lie before us, a whole galaxy wired along the thin edge of the continent. I ride one-handed, hunched over the tank, saddle-sore, while the old man sits straight-backed, unbowed by wind or mileage. Arms high on the bars, boots kicked wide. Eight hours on the bike and there are miles and miles more to go...

We are streaking over the cold gunmetal of the bay in echelon, outrunning the storm, forking the wind like arrows. My father’s taillight glows like a beacon in the falling dusk, red-bright, showing the way.

Done! 1950s JC Higgins Flightliner originally sold at Sears. Basic coaster-brake build with 425mm carbon forks, 27.5/26 mini-mullet wheelset, and one-piece cranks with half-link chain. Mainly built with parts I had lying around. Should be a fun around-towner for guests or me in boots and jumpsuit. Now I just need to put a modern headlight in the tank!

Can’t remember what bars these are, but they’re running some sweet @monebikes bar ends that match the KMC chain.

WOLVERS turned up on @goodreads as part of a trend of animals in cover art. I’d like to think this could be indicative of a shift toward wider, less narrowly anthropocentric narratives…and animal characters / POVs being taken more seriously. Have y’all noticed any such shift in recent years?

Getting closer… Hard to believe this frame is 91 years old! 1935 CWC (Cleveland Welding Company) frame sold/badged as a “Nonpareil Speed.” This frame design is sometimes known as a double-bar roadster (DBR).

Running a Sturmey-Archer XL-RD3 rear hub: 3-speed internal gear with drum brake. 27.5 x 2.6 up front, and a 26 x 2.4 fit on the rear. The seatpost is just 5/8” so I’m running a length of 7075 aluminum solid rod. Gonna be a tank!

The 1950s JC Higgins Flightliner restomod is coming along. I saw this space-age frame for cheap on EBay and had to build something with it — still has the Sears sticker on it. It’s gonna be a simple run-around-town coaster build.

27.5 F / 25 R wheels and one-piece cranks.

Turns out these frames will take modern 1–1/8” headset cups, but the fork steerer tube does rub inside the head tube. I tried honing down the inside, but then just decided to order the same fork with a 1” threadless steerer and some cup reducer rings.

Once it’s built up I’ll see if I can get the tank headlight working, maybe with an LED setup.

Gonna be a fun one!

Touring the @shelbyamericancollection in Boulder, Colorado. The car behind me (CSX2345) has never been washed since its final factory race season. They have $400+ million worth of Shelby cars here, including multiple Le Mans winners. Truly incredible!
