Private equity and venture capital both invest in businesses, but they typically target different stages of growth.

Venture capital often backs early-stage companies with high growth potential in exchange for equity.

Private equity typically invests in more established businesses, sometimes acquiring significant or controlling ownership to improve operations and increase value.

People tell me I am such a natural networker. I am really not.

What I am is prepared.📝

Before every single networking event I go into, I read my story bank.

It is a note in my phone that I have built up over the years. Personal stories. Corporate stories. Funny ones. Meaningful ones. All of them mine.

Because here is what happens when nerves kick in. Your brain goes blank. The brilliant anecdote that would have been the perfect conversation starter? Gone. The story that would have made someone feel genuinely connected to you? Vanished.

Reading your story bank before you walk in means your best material is fresh and ready. And if you forget mid event? Find the nearest bathroom and read it in there. Do what you have to do. You are there to make connections.

One day you will not need it. The stories will just come to you naturally. But until then, this is one of the most underrated things you can do to walk into a room feeling more like yourself.

Also just came across @tcburning who shared a brilliant tip on how to introduce yourself at a networking event. Well worth a watch if this resonates with you. 👀 I am also really enjoying the rest of her content that centres around how to position yourself when pitching for investment.

Terri Burns was an associate product manager at Twitter when Google Ventures came calling. Jack Dorsey told her not to take it. Stay in product, he said, and he had real reasons.

She took the job anyway. In 2020, at 26, she became the youngest partner in GV’s history and its first Black woman partner. She led the firm’s investment into Partiful in its 2022 Series A1.

In 2024 she left to start Type Capital. The fund writes first checks at pre-seed and seed into the next generation of founders building in digital consumer, developer tools and AI, often before anyone else has validated them.

First-time founders do not need to pretend they have seen everything before.

But the first meeting should not begin with: “What do you want me to do?”

Come with a point of view. The rest can be refined over time.

When do you know you’re too out of touch to invest in consumer?

Terri’s answer: ask the nearest 14-year-old.

This reading list is unhinged in a very specific way. Fame culture, medieval cathedrals, magical hierarchies, zombies climbing out of the floorboards. Different plots, same obsession: what it feels like to live inside someone else’s design (i.e a platform, an institution, a social order, the apocalypse) and still recognise yourself in the mirror. If there’s a “Terri genre,” it might just be that.

We think a lot about the first typists—literal typewriters—and how much modern software sits on top of those early analog tools. That’s part of why we named the firm Type Capital.

In a recent episode of the Trailblazers podcast, our founder Terri talks about the story behind the name, what it actually looks like to be a founder’s first check, and how we’re thinking about Gen Z founders, software, and AI over the next decade.

If you’re building something ambitious and want to understand how we see the world, this one’s a good place to start.
